Video Game Review: ‘F1 2012’ is More Than You Bargained For

CHICAGO – Racing games typically come in two flavors: Simulation and Arcade. On the Arcade side you have the excellent “Burnout Paradise,” “Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit,” “Blur,” and about a dozen more games that focus on the speed and excitement of driving a car as fast as possible, and don’t really bother too much with things like braking systems, cornering, or legality.

Film Review: Hugh Laurie, Catherine Keener in Inconsistent ‘The Oranges’

The Oranges
HollywoodChicago.com Oscarman rating: 2.0/5.0
Rating: 2.0/5.0

CHICAGO – “The Oranges” suffers from a common problem in these suburban comedies of error in that it assumes we care about these characters who are essentially less interesting than your actual neighbors. Infidelity, bad parenting, friendships collapsing – they’re happening every day on your street. Films like “The Oranges” may think they’re tapping a vein of picket fence peculiarity like “American Beauty” but the result actually plays more like a Showtime sitcom pilot that never got picked up because it was too boring to maintain week to week.

DVD Review: Clever First Season of FOX Hit ‘New Girl’

New Girl

CHICAGO – Why are audiences turning away from “New Girl” this season? I would hope that it’s purely a question of time slot competition (Tuesdays have gotten crowded all of a sudden) and overall decline in FOX ratings because it sure as Hell has nothing to do with quality. This is a show that increased steadily in laughs-per-minute over its first season, just released on DVD, and continues to work at the start of its second. Check out the new Fox DVD release to see how it all went down.

Film Review: Horror Anthology ‘V/H/S’ Offers Mixed Bag of Body Parts

VHS
HollywoodChicago.com Oscarman rating:3.0/5.0
Rating: 3.0/5.0

CHICAGO – “V/H/S” is a clever concept for a film executed with decidedly mixed results. There are enough smart ideas and chilling moments to recommend it to fans of any of its multiple genres (horror, found footage, indie film, even mumblecore), but I would never suggest it to a general audience. It is a cult film through and through and it feels like that’s just the way its talented team of creators wants it to be.

Video Game Review: ‘Marvel vs. Capcom: Origins’ is an Amusing Ret-Con

CHICAGO – “Marvel Vs. Capcom: Origins” is very much like a trade paperback comic book. It collects the first two chapters in the Marvel Fighting Game Franchise; “Marvel Super Heroes” and “Marvel Vs. Capcom” into one ready-to-play collection. Both games were developed by Capcom, developers of the legendary “Street Fighter” series, as well as about 50 other games you’ve probably heard of, played, and loved.

Blu-ray Review: Clever, Engaging ‘The Do-Deca-Pentathlon’

The Do-Deca-Pentathlon

CHICAGO – Jay & Mark Duplass clearly know a thing or two about sibling rivalry. They capture that unique blend of affection and competition in their clever and sweet “The Do-Deca-Pentathlon,” a comedy that didn’t get nearly the attention of recent efforts like “Cyrus” and “Jeff, Who Lives at Home” because of a lack of star power but makes a satisfying rental now that it’s on Blu-ray.

Blu-ray Review: Gorgeous Transfers, Hours of Bonus Material For ‘Universal Classic Monsters’

CHICAGO – It’s incredible to think about the influence of the wave of Universal monsters movies released by the studio in the ’30s and ’40s and recently collected in a gorgeous box set titled “Universal Classic Monsters: The Essential Collection.” Sure, several of the iconic characters like Dracula, Frankenstein, and The Mummy had source material to draw from but it really is the way that the Universal films, their directors, and the actors cast in them brought them to life that really defined them.

Film News: New Chicago Film Critics Association Series ‘Film with a View’ Presents ‘Almost Famous’ on Oct. 3, 2012

Almost Famous

CHICAGO – The Chicago Film Critics Association (CFCA) will begin their new series, “Film with a View,” on this coming Wednesday, October 3rd, at the Studio Movie Grill in Wheaton, Illinois, starting at 7:30pm. Admission is only one dollar. The first feature will be “Almost Famous” (2000), the rock movie directed by Cameron Crowe. CFCA member Erik Childress of eFilmCritic.com will introduce the film and lead a discussion afterward.

Blu-ray Review: ‘American Horror Story: The Complete First Season’

American Horror Story

CHICAGOFX’s “American Horror Story” was one of the most addictive programs of 2011 (and my choice for the 7th best) and that season is finally here in time to catch up before the October 17th premiere of the second season of Ryan Murphy’s Emmy-winning hit. So creative, so edgy, and so mesmerizing, “AHS” is just daring storytelling, further evidence that FX is giving talented people freedom to express themselves in ways that other networks just are not.

Film News: McHenry Outdoor Theater to Hold Drive-In Movie Fundraiser on Oct. 5, 2012

The event will help raise money to purchase a new digital projector, which the historic venue needs to stay in business. The theater is located at 1510 Chapel Hill Road in McHenry, Ill.

Book Review: ‘Alien: The Illustrated Story’ Emphasizes Lost Art of Film Adaptations

Alien: The Illustrated Story

CHICAGO – I’m old enough dear readers to remember when books were more interesting tie-ins for feature films than websites and video games. When we fell in love with a movie, we had action figures, Happy Meal toys, and, believe it or not, books. There was a time when collecting everything related to your favorite flick meant a novel adaptation and one of the absolute best, the graphic novel edition known as “Alien: The Illustrated Story” has just been reissued to show readers why this is an art form they should miss.

Blu-ray Review: ‘The Dark Knight Returns’ Works From Great Source But Lacks Soul

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns -- Part 1

CHICAGO – Is it possible that not all comic books are ones that can be adapted? Couldn’t some of them only really work on the page where the reader can fill in the grit and grime of a dark story like Frank Miller’s “The Dark Knight Returns” in ways that a literal reading in animated form just can’t do? You see what i’m getting at. I love the source material for “Batman: The Dark Knight Returns — Part 1” and there are enough interesting ideas that survived intact the journey from page to screen but the adaptation of Miller’s work doesn’t hold a candle to just reading the original.

Video Game Review: ‘NHL 13’ is Great For Newbies

CHICAGO – For sports gamers, late summer into early fall is a stressful time on the wallet. This is when EA Sports releases their holy triumvirate of sports titles; “Madden,” “FIFA,” and “NHL,” all within a month of each other. “Madden” is always a blockbuster release here in the USA, with midnight launches, coverage on ESPN, and enough hype to direct a Kanye West music video.

Blu-ray Review: Tim Burton’s ‘Dark Shadows’ Stages Toothless Vampire Satire

Dark Shadows Blu-ray

CHICAGO – “Dark Shadows” flops on the screen like an undead fish out of water. It doesn’t have one ounce of the spontaneity or style that made the work of its director, Tim Burton, or its star, Johnny Depp, so irresistible during their hot streak of the ’90s. The was back when Burton/Depp collaborations promised something more than peerless production values and morbid variations on familiar themes.

Blu-ray Review: Audrey Tautou Exudes Melancholic Radiance in ‘Delicacy’

Delicacy Blu-ray

CHICAGO – In “Delicacy,” the beguiling new film from David and Stéphane Foenkinos, there are moments that beautifully portray the strange effect that love can have on the senses. Two characters spend what appears to be a brief moment together in an office. It’s only upon leaving it that they realize hours have passed by. For fans of charming French rom-coms, this picture may have a similar effect.

Blu-ray Review: David Fincher’s ‘The Game’ Joins Criterion Collection

The Game

CHICAGO – In many ways, it’s easier to draw a direct line from 1997’s “The Game” to the work that David Fincher is doing today than it would be from “bigger hits” like “Fight Club” and “Seven.” Not only does “The Game” look strikingly similar to “Social Network” and “Girl with a Dragon Tattoo” in terms of the way Fincher and his amazing d.p. Harris Savides shoot board rooms and bad behavior but the film shares themes that still interest Fincher like obsession, ego, and deception. The Criterion edition of Fincher’s film makes the argument crystal clear that is one of the most underrated thrillers of the ’90s.

DVD Review: ‘Family Guy: Volume Ten’ Captures Hit FOX Show

Family Guy V10

CHICAGO – You’re probably still processing the news that Seth MacFarlane is hosting the Oscars next year and wondering if his TV show is still as funny as it used to be. Quick review? It’s not. The show has suffered creatively for a few years now as I think MacFarlane was spread too thin with his dozen or so projects. However, the DVD releases from FOX are still stellar, packed with special features.

DVD Review: ‘Steve Martin: The Television Stuff’ Collects Comedy History

Steve Martin: The Television Stuff

CHICAGO – Do young people know of the importance of Steve Martin to the history of comedy? In the ’70s, he helped revolutionize the form through his unique, smart, daring approach on-stage and in his TV comedies and on “Saturday Night Live.” Much of the material that made him a superstar has been collected in a stellar three-disc set from Shout Factory, now available on DVD under the banner “Steve Martin: The Television Stuff.”

Video Game Review: ‘Borderlands 2’ Has Nearly Limitless Ability to Entertain

CHICAGO – I played the first “Borderlands” with my roommate two summers ago, marathoning nightly 6-hour sessions in a haze of not-just-hookah smoke, delighting at the acid-trip aesthetic of the proceedings. Midgets, monsters, vehicles, rocket-launching sniper-rifles, giant angry dragon things — it felt like we were Alice and we made a wrong turn on our way through the Rabbit Hole.

TV News: Seth MacFarlane to Host ‘85th Annual Academy Awards’

Seth MacFarlane

CHICAGO – Seth MacFarlane, the writer/director of “Ted” and creator of “Family Guy” & “American Dad,” was announced today as the unexpected choice to host the “85th Annual Academy Awards,” to be broadcast on Sunday, February 24, 2013 on ABC.

TV News: Audiences Refuse to Check Into ‘666 Park Avenue’

666 Park Avenue

CHICAGO – The new Sunday ABC line-up of “Once Upon a Time,” “Revenge,” and “666 Park Avenue” looked very promising on paper. I think I even called it one of the smartest moves of the season. I was wrong. While the first two sophomore programs had decent ratings on their first night of the ‘12-13 season, “666” is empty, producing the kind of numbers that start the cancellation clock ticking. ABC just can’t win at 9pm on Sunday nights.

Interview: Directors Joe Swanberg, Adam Wingard, Simon Barrett Discuss ‘V/H/S’

CHICAGO – Some of the finest names in modern independent cinema may be garnering their largest audiences to date when the anthology horror film, “V/H/S,” is released on October 5th.
