What will you find on New Releases shelves at your favorite store? What could you order on iTunes this week? What should you check out and what should you avoid? Here’s your latest primer for What to Watch, in the order we think you should check ‘em out.

TV News: The 65th Annual Emmy Awards Winners

CHICAGO – The 65th Annual Emmy Awards, hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, were handed out on September 22, 2013. The awards were spread around to a number of shows, including “The Newsroom,” “Homeland,” “Veep,” “Breaking Bad,” and many more. The winners were as follows:

TV Feature: Predictions For the 65th Annual Emmy Award Winners

CHICAGO – The 65th Annual Emmy Awards, hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, will unfold on Sunday night and I’m back for that annual game of guess the winners. More than any other show, the Emmys seemed designed to make those of us who try to figure them out feel stupid.

TV Review: Take Harrowing Trip to ‘American Horror Story: Asylum’

CHICAGO – When we got to the end of FX’s excellent “American Horror Story” and nearly all of the characters were dead, a natural question arose — what the Hell do they do for season two? Welcome to “American Horror Story: Asylum,” a completely new tale with some of the same ensemble from the first season but a new setting, new characters, and new story but the same goal — to rattle your senses and put you on edge in the middle of the week.

Blu-ray Review: ‘American Horror Story: The Complete First Season’

American Horror Story

CHICAGOFX’s “American Horror Story” was one of the most addictive programs of 2011 (and my choice for the 7th best) and that season is finally here in time to catch up before the October 17th premiere of the second season of Ryan Murphy’s Emmy-winning hit. So creative, so edgy, and so mesmerizing, “AHS” is just daring storytelling, further evidence that FX is giving talented people freedom to express themselves in ways that other networks just are not.

TV Feature: The 64th Annual Emmy Awards Winners

CHICAGO – The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences handed out the 64th Annual Emmy Awards on Sunday, September 23, 2012, and we have the full list of winners, led by “Homeland,” “Modern Family,” and “Game Change.” Come back tomorrow for a gallery of the best of the red carpet.

TV Feature: When 2012 Emmy Nominees Will Be on Blu-ray, DVD

CHICAGO – You’ve surely heard the 2012 Emmy nominations by now (and probably read our choices for the biggest snubs) and maybe you’re wondering how to rent or own the chosen favorites of the Academy. Let us guide the way.

TV Feature: The 10 Best Television Shows of 2011

CHICAGO – Here’s the best news for TV fans — there’s reason again to be excited about our favorite distraction. After a few years of lackluster freshman classes, the just-ended year was simply an amazing one — eight out of my top twenty shows of 2011, a whopping forty percent, are new offerings.

On WGN Radio: Brian Tallerico on Listener’s Favorite TV Shows of 2011

WGN Radio

TV News: ‘American Horror Story’ Gets Green Light For Second FX Season

American Horror Story

CHICAGO – Show creators/executive producers Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk are on quite a roll. After creating the hit series “Nip/Tuck” and putting America in a singing and dancing craze with “Glee,” the pair have created another mega hit with his horror/drama series “American Horror Story.” Now, the pair hit treat instead of trick on Halloween afternoon as FX has given the go ahead for a second season of the series.

TV, DVD, BLU-RAY & THEATER REVIEWS

  • Bobby Pin Girls

CHICAGO – The “breeder years” are difficult on everyone, as the biological imperative becomes overwhelming and the couplings that result yield both discovery and misadventure. Nothing Without a Company’s new play “Bobby Pin Girls” highlight two such Millennial women, roommates who are having man trouble, although the argument can be made that it’s eternally “boy trouble.” The show has a Thursday-Sunday run at the Chicago Mosaic School through December 3rd, 2017. Click here for more details, including ticket information.

  • Transformers 5 front

CHICAGO – Knock me over with a feather kids, but I enjoyed “Transformers: The Last Knight.” Maybe it was in comparison to the others or maybe director Michael Bay has beaten me into submission, but this one had the right story elements and casting to make it work, with exceptions of course. It’s goofiness is its charm, and it was released on Blu-Ray/DVD on September 26th, 2017 (Digital HD already available).
