The film plays out on two levels … as a regular movie narrative and a stage play that is in essence the “back stage” to the main story. It’s 1955, and a group of science award teenagers and their parents gather in the desert town Asteroid City, to both be awarded their honors and to gaze at the solar system at the edge of the town’s asteroid crater. Their parents and relatives includes Augie (Jason Schwatzman), movie star Midge (Scarlett Johansson), J.J.(Liev Schreiber), Sandy (Hope Davis) and Stanley (Tom Hanks). They are monitored by a General (Jeffrey Wright) a scientist (Tilda Swinton) and a hotel manager (Steve Carrell), as they all gather to unlock the secrets of the universe.
