CHICAGO – I don’t think even the people who made it thought that “The Big Bang Theory,” which recently had its fifth season released on Blu-ray and DVD, would be such a massive success. And it shows no signs of slowing down. Since the comedy debuted in 2007, it has doubled its viewership, averaging almost 16 million viewers a week in its fifth season, making it easily one of the top ten shows of the year. And Jim Parsons is the odds-on favorite to win a third straight Emmy for Best Actor in a Comedy Series next weekend.

What does all of this mean to the Blu-ray release? Not much. Essentially what it means is that VERY few people are coming to the fifth season of “TBBT” completely unaware of what they think of the program. You know if you like the show or not. If you’re curious as to whether or not it’s lost a beat. Not really although I never thought it was a great program to begin with. It’s always been a decent laugh, one of those shows in which the ensemble (especially Parsons & Kaley Cuoco) have elevated often mediocre writing. I did think it was interesting how much the show switched focus this season to the women, including much larger roles for Melissa Rauch and Mayim Bialik. They’re very funny.

As for the show, WB HD transfers are the best in the business and so you know it will look good. It’s also nice that the company is supporting Ultraviolet as much as they are, which means that you can stream the entire season to your handhelds or PS3 through Vudu as soon as you buy the release. That’s pretty cool. As for special features, it’s a bit light but most fifth season releases of comedies are. There’s not really much more to say about a show that’s become such a huge hit that it’s beyond explanation.

Synopsis:
The geniuses of The Big Bang Theory get thrown for a bell curve in all 24 episodes of the phenomenally funny fifth season of the hit show. In “TV’s top-rated comedy” (New York Post), Penny and Leonard’s relationship is relaunched in full “Beta Test” mode, while Sheldon, Howard and Raj discover the feminine mystique is something that cannot be easily graphed or calculated. As Sheldon makes begrudging amendments to his “Relationship Agreement” with his “friend-who-happens-to-be-a-girl” Amy Farrah Fowler, Raj contemplates an arranged marriage, and Howard is all-systems-go for both his NASA space launch and wedding to the spirited Bernadette.
