CHICAGO – With a film that is seemingly ripped from the headlines, “The Hate U Give,” made its Red Carpet debut at the 54th Chicago International Film Festival on Thursday, October 11th, 2018. The lead actor in the film, newcomer Amandla Stenberg, along with veteran director George Tillman Jr. (“Soul Food”) and producer Robert Teitel, walked the carpet.

“The Hate U Give” is based on a Young Adult novel by Angie Thomas, and centers on Starr Carter (Amandla Stenberg) who lives in a poverty stricken black neighborhood, but attends a mostly white prep school. When she witnesses one of her friends die during a police shooting by a white officer, she must find her voice between the pressures of the two worlds she lives in. With a subject as contemporary as a film can get, it has been receiving some early Oscar buzz. Its general release in Chicago was on October 12th, 2018.
