Film News: ‘Argo’ is Best Picture at 2013 Oscars

CHICAGO – With Seth McFarlane as host, the 86th Academy Awards had more fun, and culminated with “Argo” winning Best Picture. Other major awards went to Daniel Day-Lewis (Best Actor, “Lincoln”), Jennifer Lawrence (Best Actress, “Silver Linings Playbook”) and Ang Lee (Best Director, “Life of Pi”).

Jennifer Lawrence led the surprises, beating heavily favored Jessica Chastain (“Zero Dark Thirty”). Quentin Tarantino (“Django Unchained”) also took home the Best Screenplay prize, joining Christoph Waltz, who won Best Supporting Actor for the same film. As expected, Anne Hathaway took home the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for “Les Misérables.” The Best Picture win for “Argo” was a major victory for director Ben Affleck, snubbed in the Best Director category.

Oscar history was on display when a tie took place, the first since 1995 (there have been six total, including this year). One of the most famous ties involved Barbra Streisand, who performed at this year’s show, when she tied Katharine Hepburn for Best Actress at the 1969 Oscar ceremony. The 2013 tie occurred in Best Sound Editing, for which “Zero Dark Thirty” and “Skyfall” both won. “Life of Pi” won the most Oscars, with four. “Lincoln,” which had 12 nominations, only managed to take home two, for Best Actor Day-Lewis and Best Production Design. The show clocked in at slightly over three and half hours.
