CHICAGO – “The Dark Knight Rises” held the top spot at the domestic box office for the third straight week, fending off newcomers “Total Recall” and “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days” with relative ease. Neither newcomer made much of a dent at all but “TDKR” should fall next week to “The Bourne Legacy.”
In international news, “The Dark Knight Rises” is up $733 million worldwide, not that far from the $1 billion made by 2008’s “The Dark Knight” and already the second-highest grossing film worldwide of the year (following “The Avengers” at the 3rd-highest-ever $1.46 billion).
Finally, if you’re curious about a comparison with the new releases. The original “Total Recall” opened with $25.5 million in 1990 on its way to $119 million total, a peak that the new film surely won’t hit (and, keep in mind, those are 1990 dollars). The remake is a disappointment. “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” fell victim to the law of diminishing returns as well, opening significantly less than the first two films in the series, which were closer to $23 million.
This weekend sees an interesting array of new releases including “The Bourne Legacy,” “The Campaign,” and “Hope Springs [13].”
