‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Hints Marvel is Out of Ideas
Submitted by PatrickMcD on July 25, 2024 - 9:02amRating: 2.5/5.0 |
CHICAGO –In “Wolverine & Deadpool” we witness the complete and utter exhaustion of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This movie is like sitting next to a particularly annoying Twitter/X feed that never stops announcing its own cleverness, but whose quips aren’t nearly as funny as it thinks they are. I may be in the minority, but I’ve always found Deadpool to be a little exhausting.
MCU’s ‘The Marvels’ is Decidedly Non-Marvelous
Submitted by PatrickMcD on November 9, 2023 - 9:21pmRating: 2.0/5.0 |
CHICAGO – Some Marvel movies are essential viewing for those following the ongoing advancements in the Marvel Cinema Universe (MCU). “The Marvels” is eminently skippable, and draws from so many different MCU properties it almost feels like you’d have to cram for a comic book final exam to understand half of what is going on.
Pocket Rocket in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’
Submitted by PatrickMcD on May 5, 2023 - 8:24amRating: 3.5/5.0 |
CHICAGO – The Guardians of the Galaxy have lost some of their freshness over the years. They’re no long the scrappy obscurities who came out of nowhere to deliver one of the more idiosyncratic and enjoyable adventures in the Marvel Cinema Universe. But while familiarity has taken some of the elements of surprise, they’re still an agreeable bunch to watch.
Shrink Wrapped ‘Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania’
Submitted by PatrickMcD on February 17, 2023 - 7:11amRating: 4.0/5.0 |
CHICAGO – Ant-Man gets supersized in this agreeable Marvel Studios movie, which pits our tiny hero against his most formidable foe yet. While the first two Ant-Man movies were largely comic detours where the bug sized superhero carved a small but charming place in the larger universe, the third Ant-Man and The Wasp film puts him squarely at the center of the next phase of Marvel moviemaking.

Mechanical ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’
Submitted by PatrickMcD on May 6, 2022 - 12:40amRating: 3.0/5.0 |
CHICAGO – “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” proves that more Doctor Stranges do not necessarily equal more fun. And more so than other comic book adventures, this seems like a cog in the Marvel machine first, and an adventure in its own right a very distant second.

CHICAGO – There is an undeniable pleasure in watching films that don’t take themselves too seriously. Nothing against the Nolans and Snyders of the comic book universe because they provide an essential service to the film community with their more grounded, dramatic approach.
