CHICAGO – With a Chicago tradition that goes back four decades, the Goodman Theatre presents their holiday chestnut ‘A Christmas Carol’ for 2019, and it is simply stellar.

Film Review: Hacker Thriller ‘Blackhat’ Has a Finger on the Enter Key
Submitted by NickHC on January 16, 2015 - 6:28pmCHICAGO – A speedy film project can take about a year from conception to final cut; director Michael Mann’s wired-in thriller “Blackhat” might as well have been written, shot, and cut last month. Not just because of its epilogue to the rise and defeat of the Guardians of Peace, but for its modernity.
Blu-ray Review: James Brown Biopic ‘Get on Up’ Has No Soul
Submitted by NickHC on January 13, 2015 - 2:45pmCHICAGO – When people yawn about the dullness of movies based on life stories, they are certainly referring to films like “Get On Up,” an absurdly uninteresting portrait of a key figure of music, or so this movie claims. From the “The Help’s” vanilla visionary Tate Taylor, this 140-minute ode to James Brown is a half-assed argument about his nonpareil greatness, and full evidence that the biopic may be the weakest genre in film.

Film Review: Lives Interact in ‘The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Them’
Submitted by PatrickMcD on September 22, 2014 - 1:09pmCHICAGO – There was something blank within “The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Them,” although it dealt with the issues of loss, family and reconciliation. The all star cast, including Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy and William Hurt, add their performing spins to the story.
Film Review: James Brown Bio ‘Get On Up’ Stuck in a Funk
Submitted by PatrickMcD on August 1, 2014 - 3:25pmCHICAGO – “Get On Up” contains one dynamite performance trapped in a frustratingly mediocre movie. James Brown’s life and music offer a wealth of material to work with, that doesn’t necessarily adhere to the conventions of a formulaic musical biopic.

Blu-ray Review: Riveting ‘Prisoners’ Connects Even on Repeat Viewing
Submitted by BrianTT on December 17, 2013 - 3:32pmDenis Villeneuve’s “Prisoners” seems to have been lost in the awards season conversation and that’s a shame. Not only is Richard Deakins’ cinematography some of the best in his career but Jake Gyllenhaal and Hugh Jackman’s emotional work here deserves more credit than it’s been getting. Newly released on a gorgeous Blu-ray (with, sadly, scant special features), “Prisoners” is the kind of adult drama that seems certain to pick up more fans on the home market. It’s really worth your time.
Film Review: ‘Ender’s Game’ Loses Personality in Journey From Book to Film
Submitted by BrianTT on October 31, 2013 - 10:37amCHICAGO – Gavin Hood’s “Ender’s Game” may be the best example of a current problem with science fiction: From “Oblivion” to “After Earth” to most of “Star Trek Into Darkness” and now this adaptation of the Orson Scott Card book, modern science fiction has become so depressingly sterile as to drain the genre of most of its joy.
