TV News: ‘Revolution’ Starts Strong on NBC, ‘The Mob Doctor’ Bombs on FOX

Revolution from J.J. Abrams, Jon Favreau

CHICAGO – The HollywoodChicago.com prediction that “The Mob Doctor” looks likely to be the first cancellation of the new year was proven correct in last night’s overnight ratings as the FOX drama premiered to anemic numbers against only “The Voice” on NBC. Once “2 Broke Girls” and “Dancing with the Stars” enter the timeslot, it’s only a matter of time before the axe swings. Meanwhile, “Revolution” opened very strongly and held its audience well.

TV News: NBC Wins Monday Night With ‘The Voice,’ ‘Smash’

Smash

CHICAGONBC used the Super Bowl to launch their highly-promoted Super Monday and the gamble paid off as the troubled network won the night, beating a very competitive slate of programming on CBS and ABC. “The Voice” is a ratings beast and “Smash” was heavily sampled. Of course, whether or not “Smash” is a hit will be determined the further it gets away from the Super Bowl hype.

TV News: Showtime Renews ‘Shameless,’ ‘House of Lies,’ ‘Californication’

House of Lies

CHICAGO – Not to be outdone by HBO, who renewed their Sunday hit “Luck” yesterday, Showtime gave season renewals today to their impressive slate of Sunday shows — “Shameless,” “House of Lies,” and “Californication.” All three have done remarkably well in the ratings as the two veterans have improved on previous season numbers and “House of Lies” has done very well in its first few freshman frames.

TV News: ‘Person of Interest,’ ‘Unforgettable’ Given Full Season Orders

Person of Interest

CHICAGO – As expected, CBS has given back-episode orders to new dramas “Unforgettable” and “Person of Interest,” meaning they’ll be on until at least May 2012. As for whether or not they’ll get second seasons, let the bubble watch begin. Both shows have done well in overall viewers but not as respectably in the key youth demos.

TV News: Tim Allen’s ‘Last Man Standing’ Opens With Strong Ratings

Last Man Standing Pilot

CHICAGO – Critics may have been cruel but audiences were curious enough to see what Tim Allen’s “Home Improvement” schtick looks like in 2011, sampling the series premiere of ABC’s “Last Man Standing” to the tune of a solid 3.5 rating in the key 18-49 demo. Last year, “No Ordinary Family” opened in the time slot with a 3.2 rating and it’s worth nothing that the baseball game on FOX ate into every other network, especially with younger viewers, so there’s reason to believe that the numbers would have otherwise been higher.

TV News: ‘New Girl,’ ‘Unforgettable’ Hold Strong Second Week Ratings

New Girl

CHICAGO – With new shows, it’s always about week two. How far do you drop from the highly-promoted week one numbers when there aren’t as many ads or reviews to remind viewers you’re on the air? CBS’s “Unforgettable” and FOX’s “New Girl” held strong from their week one numbers while “Glee” continued to slide from year to year.
