Rock of Ages

Podtalk: Malin Akerman of ‘Rampage’ on Michigan Avenue Cover

CHICAGO – The restaurant Katana, in the River North neighborhood of Chicago, was the setting for the unveiling of Michigan Avenue Magazine’s latest cover on April 3rd… their 2018 Spring Style issue. Actress Malin Akerman (“Billions,” “The Heartbreak Kid”), whose latest film is “Rampage,” graced the front of the issue.

Blu-ray Review: Interminable ‘Rock of Ages’ Goes On and On and On and On

Rock of Ages Blu-ray

CHICAGO – How can the same man who made one of the most lovable movie musicals of the last decade go on to make one of the most hatable? Adam Shankman’s bouncy, broad approach was a splendid fit for the playful “Hairspray,” but it is all wrong for Chris D’Arienzo’s raunchy, melodramatic ode to ’80s rock. His show, “Rock of Ages,” may have been a hit on Broadway, but it was a complete flop with moviegoers and critics alike.

Box Office News: Tom Cruise, Adam Sandler Bomb With Horrible Openings

Rock of Ages (cropped)

CHICAGO – Tom Cruise and Adam Sandler proved to be fallible this weekend as their latest offerings — “Rock of Ages” and “That’s My Boy,” respectively — delivered far below even their meager expectactions, finishing third and fifth for the frame and failing to crack $16 million for three days. The top two — “Madagascar 3” and “Prometheus” — remained unchanged although Ridley Scott’s controversial film took a notable plummet of over 60%.

Film Review: Tom Cruise, Julianne Hough Have Fun in ‘Rock of Ages’

CHICAGO – Although the jukebox musical needs an available pasture to be put out onto, the new film “Rock of Ages” – based on the Broadway stage play – improves on that genre by having a little fun and lots of tongue-in-cheek. Tom Cruise, Julianne Hough, Alec Baldwin and Russell Brand rock the cashbox.

Interview: Jeremy Jordan Makes ‘Joyful Noise’ in Film Debut

Jeremy Jordan (fixed)

CHICAGO – It is a story as old as show business itself. Plucky understudy replaces a Broadway musical lead on the same night a movie director decides to take in the play, which results in the understudy getting his first movie role. It happened exactly like that to stage – and now screen – performer Jeremy Jordan, who made his debut over the weekend in the film “Joyful Noise.”

Theater Review: ‘Rock of Ages’ Ain’t Nothin’ But a Good Time

The cast of 'Rock of Ages'

CHICAGO – “I wanted to explore deep, thoughtful theatre,” deadpans a giddily vitriolic narrator, played here in a last minute swap-out by Mitchell Jarvis, during the eleventh hour of “Rock of Ages”. Although referring to any aspect of this rollicking, trenchantly self-aware jukebox ride in classical terms may either be mawkishly generous or downright offensive to its recalcitrant intent.
