Blu-ray Review: ‘Mildred Pierce: The Collector’s Edition’
Submitted by BrianTT on January 9, 2012 - 12:57pmCHICAGO – I must admit that I am of the school that thinks that “Mildred Pierce” is one of the best things that has ever played on television. It is art of the highest caliber, featuring one of the best performances in the history of the form and were it eligible it would have been in my top ten films of 2011. It’s that good. And the “Collector’s Edition” of the award-winning series lives up to that title, marking the first time that HBO has ever released a DVD/Blu-ray combo pack and weighing the production down with special features. It’s the first must-own of 2012.
TV Review: Maria Bello is Best Reason to Interrogate ‘Prime Suspect’
Submitted by BrianTT on September 22, 2011 - 9:55amCHICAGO – Watching the premiere of NBC’s “Prime Suspect” again, I was struck by something undeniable — this feels like a TNT show. Yes, we’ve officially reached the point where basic cable is influencing network TV more than the other way around.
TV Review: Kate Winslet, Todd Haynes Elevate ‘Mildred Pierce’ to Masterpiece
Submitted by BrianTT on March 27, 2011 - 9:04amCHICAGO – When HBO announced that they were producing a six-hour mini-series version of the James M. Cain (“Double Indemnity”) novel “Mildred Pierce” to star Kate Winslet and be directed by Todd Haynes, cinephiles everywhere let out an audible gasp.

DVD Review: Catch Up With ‘FlashForward’ at Halfway Point
Submitted by BrianTT on March 3, 2010 - 5:38pmCHICAGO – Watching commercial-free episodes back-to-back on DVD illuminates a show’s strengths and weaknesses (while also making drinking games easier to spot from a show’s repetitive moments). “Lost” and “24” were helped amply by their season sets, as their breakneck pace worked even better without a need to push fast forward on a DVR remote.
TV News: ABC’s ‘FlashForward’ Will Move Forward For Full Season
Submitted by BrianTT on October 13, 2009 - 9:16pmCHICAGO – It comes to no surprise to hear that freshman series “FlashForward” got picked up for a full season by ABC, according to popular blogger Michael Ausiello.
TV Review: ABC’s ‘FlashForward’ Could Easily Be the Next ‘Lost’
Submitted by BrianTT on September 24, 2009 - 10:27amCHICAGO – Do you think that if the creators of “Lost” were allowed a glimpse at their futures when their hit show began that they would have seen a montage of all the series that it would inspire?
Blu-Ray Review: Don’t Be Fooled By Action Promise of ‘The International’
Submitted by BrianTT on June 17, 2009 - 8:00amCHICAGO – The cover for the Blu-Ray release of Tom Tykwer’s “The International,” starring Clive Owen and Naomi Watts, sells the film as an action-packed thriller for a new era. There’s Clive with a deadly snarl, a gash on his face, and a firing gun. Don’t buy it. “The International” features some lovely settings, but it’s ultimately too dull to deliver.
Clive Owen, Naomi Watts Fail to Save Deadly Dull ‘The International’
Submitted by BrianTT on February 12, 2009 - 11:54pmCHICAGO – Tom Tykwer’s “The International,” an alleged thriller starring Clive Owen and Naomi Watts, is one of the most surprisingly inert films so far this year, an awfully written conspiracy flick that never gets out of neutral and is only remotely worth someday seeing for one fantastic action sequence.
