Video Game Review: ‘Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock’ Delivers on Expectations

Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock

CHICAGO – If you think that most of the music games in the most impressive new genre of the last several years have been nothing more than expensive expansion packs then I doubt that “Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock” is really going to change your mind. The game is far from a drastic leap forward from what fans have already experienced but there are enough quality refinements and enjoyable tunes that it delivers what you should expect when judged on its own terms.

Video Game Review: Shockingly Enjoyable ‘Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions’

CHICAGO – There have been so many bad superhero games that, despite my adoration for last year’s amazing “Batman: Arkham Asylum,” I still approach them with serious trepidation. And 2008’s Peter Parker Activision title – “Spider-Man: Web of Shadows” – was just not good.

Video Game Review: ‘Transformers: War For Cybertron’ Proves Sometimes Bigger is Better

CHICAGO – With Michael Bay filming “Transformers 3” in downtown Chicago, it’s reawakened our childhood love for the famous toys and we wanted to share arguably the best product to bear the “Transformers” name in the last several years — “Transformers: War For Cybertron.”

Video Game Review: Despite Obvious Inspirations, ‘Singularity’ Delivers Original Thrills

CHICAGO – With echoes of “Bioshock,” “Resistance,” and a number of shooter hits as diverse as “F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin” and “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2,” “Singularity” embraces its derivative nature but transcends it to become one of the more surprisingly enjoyable single-player campaigns of the year.

Video Game Review: Addictive ‘Blur’ Tests More Than Driving Ability

CHICAGO – May 2010 has seen a trio of racing games that might blur together for casual players but that all come with their own unique identities. Sony’s “ModNation Racers” (which we will review later this week) is about the customizable experience and plays closer to something like “Super Mario Kart” meets “Little Big Planet”. Disney’s “Split/Second” is a car chase scene from a Michael Bay movie brought to life. The most traditional and arguably most addictive is Activision’s “Blur,” a thrill ride that moves at such a high rate of speed that decisions need to made in the blink of an eye.

Video Game Review: ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’ Gets ‘Stimulus Package’

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Stimulus Package

CHICAGO – After watching a large number of their soldiers pick up their gear and trudge off to the amazing multiplayer of “Battlefield: Bad Company 2,” Activision and Infinity Ward have made some recent moves designed to bring video game warriors back to the beloved “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2”. Xbox 360 players got the “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Stimulus Package” first but it’s now available on the PS3 with word of a “Resurgence Pack” hot on its heels.

Video Game Review: Repetitive, Disappointing ‘How to Train Your Dragon’

How to Train Your Dragon Video Game

CHICAGO – DreamWorks Animation’s “How to Train Your Dragon” is one of the best movies of the year to date; a remarkably enjoyable experience that works for children and adults and deserves to be doing even better at the box office. Don’t miss it while you still have the chance. The game that ties in with it? You can miss that.

Video Game Review: ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’ Delivers on High Expectations

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

CHICAGO – One of the more anticipated games in years is finally here and, by now, most diehard fans of “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare” have played through “Modern Warfare 2” on multiple difficulty levels and spent countless hours working through the variety of multiplayer modes and special ops missions. Hardcore fans of this franchise don’t just “play” these games. They eat, breathe, and live “Modern Warfare” for months after the game’s release and with a title this good, who can blame them?

Video Game Review: Activision Gets Poppy With Catchy ‘Band Hero’

Band Hero

CHICAGO – No one can accuse Activision and Neversoft of allowing their music game franchise to get stale. In fact, some might argue that they have flooded the market with too many similar products including “Guitar Hero: Metallica,” “Guitar Hero: Smash Hits,” “Guitar Hero 5,” “DJ Hero,” and, now, “Band Hero” in just this year alone (with “Guitar Hero: Van Halen” dropping before Christmas as well).
