Here is the “Invictus” plot description:

From director Clint Eastwood, “Invictus” tells the inspiring true story of how Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman) joined forces with the captain of South Africa’s rugby team, Francois Pienaar (Matt Damon), to help unite their country.

Newly elected president Mandela knows his nation remains racially and economically divided in the wake of apartheid. Believing he can bring his people together through the universal language of sport, Mandela rallies South Africa’s underdog rugby team as they make an unlikely run to the 1995 World Cup championship match.

Nelson Mandela spent 27 years as a political prisoner in South Africa before becoming the country’s first black president. Mandela was a leading member of the African National Congress (ANC), which opposed South Africa’s white minority government and its policy of racial separation, known as apartheid. The government outlawed the ANC in 1960. Mandela was captured and jailed in 1962, spending many of these years on Robben Island.

Why mandella was sent to jail

He was initially charged with leading workers to strike, and for leaving the country illegally. For those actions he was sentenced to prison for 5 years. Two years later (1964) he was charged for planning armed action, omitting acts of sabotage, and conspiracy to help countries invade South Africa. For these charges he was sentenced to lifetime imprisonment.

Why was Nelson Mandela sent to prison?

He was convicted by the South African courts on charges of sabotage, as well as other “crimes” he committed while leading the movement against apartheid. He led workers to strike in 1961 and left the country illegally.
