Pixar’s ‘Up’ to Open Cannes Film Festival in May 2009

CHICAGOPixar continues their plan for world dominance with their 2009 film “Up” being announced today as the opening film for the 62nd Cannes Film Festival in May. Produced under John Lasseter’s supervision, the film that follows “WALL-E,” “Cars,” “The Incredibles,” “Finding Nemo,” “Toy Story,” and more under the prestigious Pixar banner will be the Opening Ceremony film in Disney Digital 3-D on Wednesday, May 13th, 2009.

Pixar also sent over a new still for director Pete Docter’s (“Monsters, Inc.”) adventure about a 78-year-old who fulfills his dream of a great adventure when he ties thousands of balloons to his house and flies away to the wilds of South America, only to discover that he has brought with him his biggest nightmare, a 9-year-old Wilderness Explorer stowaway.

“Up,” which opens in the United States on May 29th, 2009 and in France on July 29th, 2009 will be the first animated film to open the Festival de Cannes. Other animated films that have played there in Official Selection include “Dumbo,” “The Fantastic Planet,” “Fritz the Cat,” “Shrek,” “The Triplets of Belleville,” “Shrek 2,” “Over the Hedge,” “Kung-Fu Panda,” and “Waltz With Bashir”. The fest runs from May 13th to May 24th.
