CHICAGO – Doc10, the annual Chicago ten-film-documentary festival, opens on May 19th, 2022, with a ripped-from-the-headlines event. “The Janes” is the story of a Chicago collective from the late 1960s to early ‘70s that provided abortions in the pre-Roe v. ”The Janes” concern The Jane Collective of Chicago, operating from 1968 through 1973. The feminist group began setting up safe and available abortions for women through underground channels, during a period of time when the procedure was illegal in Illinois (and most of America until Roe v Wade), through laws determined by the patriarchy. Using a male practitioner, and then learning to do abortions themselves, the former “Janes” tell the story of a period for woman’s health that now seems stone age … except when looking at the repressive laws against women being perpetuated AGAIN by the patriarchy. The issue is about who can get an abortion both then and now … only those who can afford to travel away from states making it illegal again for all woman. A must see film-as-perspective for these troubling times. Directors Emma Pildes and Tia Lessin, as well as members of The Jane Collective, will be in attendance for a post-film Q&A.

The Doc10 Film premieres TEN highly curated documentary films in Chicago. Since 2015, Doc10 has developed a reputation as a premier festival on the awards circuit. The fest is curated by the Chicago Media Project (CMP), a nonprofit and member-supported organization that provides great documentary films and social impact media to Chicago – as well as nationally – to promote, foster interest and generate engagement for documentary projects through many unique avenues.
