Film News: Chicago Spotlight on 2017 CIMMfest From Nov. 9-12

CHICAGO – The fall movie season continues in Chicago with one of the best movie-music-party celebrations of the year. CIMMfest – the Chicago International Movie & Music Festival – is back for its 9th year, and promises another blast of great sounds and movies about those sounds, in all genres.

Here are some of the highlights from a long weekend of offerings…

StarOPENING NIGHT

The Opening Night film – on Thursday, November 9th – is the Chicago Premiere of “Living on Soul,” a documentary chronicling Daptone Records, a historic funk and soul label, followed by a tribute concert featuring jazz artist Lili K as Sharon Jones (a featured singer in the Daptone documentary) and a DJ set by Neal Sugarman, co-founder of Daptone Records. It all takes place at Martyrs’, 3855 N. Lincoln in Chicago.

StarBAADASSSSS AWARD

CIMMfest 2017 celebrates the career and films of director Penelope Spheeris with a retrospective of her films during the entire run of the fest, and culminates on Awards Night with the presentation of the Baadasssss Award to Spheeris, given to artists with the proper attitude and energy to be a badass (Penelope Spheeris will attend). Also the Best of the Fest will be honored at the ceremony.

As part of CIMMfest, the annual CIMMcon Film, Music and Tech Industry conference takes place, with a number of informational and thematic panels regarding the industries. All the events are FREE and open to the public, with CIMMfest pass holders having a opportunity for priority seating.

Since it’s in the title, along with “Music” below, the depth and breadth of the film offerings at CIMMfest is a sonic lovers dream. From Music Movements to Rock Docs to Narrative Films (including short films and music videos, naturally), the lively range of film presentations has something for all tastes. NOTE: Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com will do director/artist interviews and moderate Q&As for the films “Queercore” (Friday, November 10th, 9:30pm at the Davis Theatre) and “Tom Rush: No Regrets” (Sunday, November 12th, 2pm at Old Town School of Folk Music).
