CHICAGO – Truly unique and creative micro-budget films are as rare as a sighting of Bigfoot these days, as so many people are picking up a camera to give it try. The production of “Dave Made a Maze” is a happy exception, a film that delivers the thrills and at the same time makes fun of them. Throw in hipsters-in-peril and homages to 1980s adventure films, and it’s easy to find the way through this fun movie.

Dave (Nick Thune) is a stay-at-home slacker who never can finish his many creative endeavors, much to the chagrin of his working partner Annie (Meera Rohit Kumbhani). Coming back from a business trip, Annie discovers kid size cardboard fort structure in their living room, and Dave is inside it. In fact, he’s been inside it for three days, unable to find his way out in a maze of his own construction. Annie recruits Dave’s friend Gordon (Adam Busch) and a collection of odd folks – including a documentary camera crew and Finnish tourists – to venture inside the maze, and once they are inside the interior turns out to be cavernous. The adventure begins, fraught with booby traps, overwhelming sights and a minotaur who wants to kill them. Will Annie have the key to freedom?
The Midwest Independent Film Festival is a year-round movie event in Chicago that takes place the first Tuesday of every month, at the Landmark Century Centre Cinema. The festival has been recognized by Chicago Magazine in their “Best of Chicago” issue, and has become one of the top places for local filmmakers, producers and actors to network in the city.
Producer John Charles Meyer is a longtime working actor, with credits including “The Vampire Diaries,” “Mom” and “Hawaii Five-O,” and has been producing films since 2011. In the following podcast interview, he talks about the idea of the film, his involvement as producer and his feelings on the concept of “rehearsal” for independent features.
