The film is a story of discovery, as a director and photographer go from village to village in search of an actor to star in a film based on the famous Tibetan opera “Drimé Kunden.” The journey takes the team through Tibet, and their villages, towns, townships and monasteries. Mystery is added when a woman is found to portray a concubine in the opera, but will not reveal her covered face. The film is director Pema Tseden’s fifth film, and features actor Zong Zhi.

The Asian Pop-Up Cinema series – founded by Chicago film program veteran Sophia Wong Boccio – is a revolving showcase of diverse Asian films, with China, Hong Kong, Inner Mongolia, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Tibet and Vietnam all represented for the 2017 Spring Season, in films with English subtitles. Screenings occur at the AMC River East 21 in downtown Chicago, the Wilmette Theater in Wilmette, Illinois, and various locations (including free screenings).
