CHICAGO – And the winner was… a wild and bizarre ending to the 89th Academy Awards, as Best Picture presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway were given a wrong envelope, resulting in a call of “La La Land” as top movie, but after an on-stage melee, it was further revealed that the Best Picture was actually “Moonlight.”

Beatty – who co-presented with Dunaway 50 years after their starring together in “Bonnie & Clyde – hesitated after opening the envelope, before having Dunaway announce that the musical “La La Land” as Best Picture. The usual celebration on stage took place, until producer Jordan Horowitz of “La La Land” held up the real envelope and said, “This is not a joke, ‘Moonlight’ has won Best Picture,” and after a hesitation, “‘Moonlight.’ Best Picture.” The crew from “Moonlight” took the stage, for a delayed gratification that took away from their victory lap.

Up to that point, the night played out pretty well for host Jimmy Kimmel, as he kept the pace brisk and added a killer comedy surprise for a group of Los Angeles tourists, as he brought the busload in for a tour of “The Oscar Ceremony” – with one Chicago couple even getting “married” by their favorite actor, Denzel Washington. Of a record-tying 14 nominations, “La La Land” took home six wins. The winners of the five other major awards, Best Actor for Casey Affleck (“Manchester by the Sea”), Best Actress for Emma Stone (“La La Land”), Best Supporting Actor for Mahershala Ali (“Moonlight”), Best Supporting Actress for Viola Davis (“Fences”) and Best Director for Damien Chazelle (“La La Land”) basically played out as predicted…until the “moment” occurred at the end.
