CHICAGO – We get a lot of Blu-rays and DVDs in the HollywoodChicago.com office of films that come straight to the format that we don’t think are really worth our time or yours. The less said about them, the better. And yet every once in awhile, something passes through the USPS that seems like it might draw more attention that the typical straight-to-DVD junk. An action movie with two Oscar winners and gritty style? Sounds like a perfect late summer rental? “Freelancers” is very far from perfect.

Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson might have once been a big enough star to allow producers to get over the fact that he’s too dull here to warrant giving this flick a theatrical release. Jackson is not an interesting protagonist but that’s not the biggest problem with “Freelancers.” If a computer program was fed cliches about the “bad cop action genre,” it would spit out this screenplay. At times, you can practically see Forest Whitaker and Robert De Niro roll their eyes at the lackluster dialogue that seems cobbled together in a way designed to meet a certain amount of cliches per minute. I want to say that this is a fun B-movie alternative, the kind of straight-to-DVD action flick that just provides a fun time on a Friday night. There’s nothing fun about “Freelancers.”
