Here is the synopsis for “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close”:

Adapted from the acclaimed bestseller by Jonathan Safran Foer, “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close” is a story that unfolds from inside the young mind of Oskar Schell. He’s an inventive, 11-year-old New Yorker whose discovery of a key in his deceased father’s belongings sets him off on an urgent search across the city for the lock it will open.

A year after his father died in the World Trade Center on what Oskar calls “The Worst Day,” he is determined to keep his vital connection to the man who playfully cajoled him into confronting his wildest fears.

As Oskar crosses the five New York boroughs in quest of the missing lock – encountering an eclectic assortment of people who are survivors in their own way – he begins to uncover unseen links to the father he misses, the mother who seems so far away from him and the whole noisy, dangerous and discombobulating world around him.

I’m from Australia so when

I’m from Australia so when the attacks occured it was the middle of the night for us. My brother and I stayed up all night watching the coverage and he told me that the world would never be the same. He was right.

Sept 11th Story

I was sitting in a college calculus class with a few friends when a few people received text messages there had been a huge accident. Everyone was dismissed from the class a bit early I arrived back in my dorm room just as the 2nd plane was crashing into the Trader Center. Everyone on AOL started getting really worried and that was the first time I realized it had been terrorist attacks an not accidents.

my third day of training through Americorps

I just finished undergrad a month earlier and was excited about starting my AmeriCorps year back in my hometown, Chicago,IL. We were going through our first week of training and I couldn’t be more excited about having a set plan after ungrad. No delay or job search. I had my “job” set up and I was excited about a year of service.

On training day three, Sept 11th happened. We heard some strange news and buzz regarding the incident and I actually didn’t know what the WOrld Trade Center was. I didn’t know what the buildings looked like to know the scope of the damage. THe entire AMericorp group, all 100 of us, sat around and talked about what had occupured and how although some members were from the NYC area, they stated how they were actually glad to not be in NY at that moment. It was just eerie, hoping that the scope of things and the potential lives lost weren’t really taking place as we heard. Maybe there was some news mistake, but it was emblazoned on every channel and I knew, although I was excited about the start of my new year in AmeriCorps, that 9/11 would forever shape the way I looked at service, the country and politics.

Sept 11, a day to remember

Driving down Ashland Ave. to get to Amundsen H.S. where I was doing a teacher training session proved to be a day I would never forget. Hearing the news about the plane crashes into the World Trade Center brought shivers down my spine. How could that happen? When I walked into the school for the training, we realized that it would not happend. We needed to be silent and pray or reflect in our own way for those whose lives were lost or injured.

Sept 11 story

I was in High School between classes. Walked into history class to see it on the news. Every student, teacher, faculty member spent the rest of the day glued to the television hardly speaking at all.

I worked in the Chicago Sales division of United Airlines and the entire office was in emergency mode: getting communication from corporate headquarters and our operations center and fielding calls and emails from customers.
