CHICAGO – After what many considered to be a rather dull and boring host in James Franco and an overly perky and strangely excited job by Anne Hathaway, the 2012 edition of the Academy Awards will be hosted by a completely different talent: actor/comedian Eddie Murphy. Rumors spread this past weekend that Murphy was in the running for the position and the Academy confirmed the speculation was true this morning when they officially named Murphy the host.

Murphy, who has really only had recent success with the “Shrek” movies, is best known for his roles in “Trading Places” “Coming to America” “Beverly Hills Cop” and “The Nutty Professor.” The actor/comedian will be hosting the Academy Awards for the first time and was very thankful for the opportunity in a release this morning:

“I am enormously honored to join the great list of past Academy Award hosts from Hope and Carson to Crystal, Martin and Goldberg, among others,” Murphy said. “I’m looking forward to working with Brett and Don on creating a show that is enjoyable for both the fans at home and for the audience at the Kodak Theatre as we all come together to celebrate and recognize the great film contributions and collaborations from the past year.”

The “Brett and Don” Murphy mentioned are Brett Ratner and Don Mischer, the men who will produce the 84th Academy Awards ceremony. Ratner, who directed Murphy’s next theatrical release “Tower Heist” (releasing this coming November 4), had wanted Murphy from the start of their search and expects the show to benefit with him as emcee:

“Eddie is a comedic genius, one of the greatest and most influential live performers ever,” Ratner said in a press release this morning. “With his love of movies, history of crafting unforgettable characters and his iconic performances — especially on stage — I know he will bring excitement, spontaneity and tremendous heart to the show Don and I want to produce in February.”

Murphy will be take the stage on Sunday, February 26, 2012 at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles, California when the 84th annual Academy Awards celebrates the 2011 year of film.
