Captain America's Name

The formal explanation is that the creator thought there were too many “Super” heroes; the more complicated analysis has to do with saving wartime America with a hero created from a less-than-average, frail guy, who, with the aid of the US Government, rose to the occasion and beyond. The name means he’s us, however ordinary, vanquishing whatever’s thrown at him, more with courage than super power.

He’s wearing some stars and stripes which obviously represents America generally. Therefore it feels right that the US government calls him or gives him the nickname “Captain America”. The “America” stands for the symbol he represents, be it his costume and shield. Not to mention that he fights for ‘freedom, ‘liberty’ and ‘justice’. The “Captain” name on the other hand was simply because he was promoted among all the Super Soldier candidates.

Historically during the character’s publication: The writer Joe Simon was originally going to name him “Super American”, but he felt that there are lot of characters already who has “Super” on their titles.
