Fans of FX’s “Justified” know Elmore Leonard as the creator of the character “Raylan Givens”: a U.S. Marshall from Leonard’s novels “Pronto” and “Riding the Rap”. What you may not know is that Leonard’s career spans 60 years, 44 novels, 21 feature-film adaptations and three honorary doctorates. Turning 85 this October, Leonard hasn’t lost a step.

Justified on FX

In “Djibouti” (published by William Morrow and available on Oct. 12, 2010), Leonard departs Detroit and Los Angeles for the Horn of Africa where Somali pirates own the seas, al-Qaeda operatives lurk in the streets and loyalty is scarcer than clean drinking water.

Young American filmmaker Dara Barr is fresh off an Oscar win for her documentary on Hurricane Katrina and anxious for a new challenge. With her 6’7” cameraman and confidant (Xavier LeBo) at her side, she embarks on a journey into the heart of Djibouti intent on pulling the covers off the shadowy world of modern-day piracy.

Leonard has written “Road Dogs,” “Up in Honey’s Room,” “The Hot Kid,” “Mr. Paradise,” “Tishomingo Blues” as well as the critically acclaimed collection of short stories “When the Women Come Out to Dance”. Many of his books have been made into movies including “Get Shorty,” “Out of Sight” and “Be Cool”.

Leonard is the recipient of a lifetime achievement award from PEN USA and a grand master award from the Mystery Writers of America. He lives with his wife, Christine, in Bloomfield Village, Mich. Read HollywoodChicago.com’s rave review of “Justified” with Timothy Olyphant.
