Cocoon

While I’ve enjoyed many Ron Howard films, 1985’s Cocoon holds a dear place in my heart. It’s hard to believe that the film is 25 years old this month. That summer, I was 13 yrs. old and I was be immersed in movies. I vividly recall my grandparents taking me to see this movie and I was at the age when hanging out with grandma and grandpa wasn’t all that. At least that’s how I came across but deep down I loved spending time with them, especially when they took me to the movies. Going in, I knew that this was a movie filled with senior citizens so that right there didn’t really fire me up but the fact that it had aliens…well, I was all over that. I wound up immensely enjoying the film, especially watching it with my grandparents. Afterwards, we went out for some ice cream and they shared how while it would be fun to be experience a youth injection, they wouldn’t want to stay that way since the world around them would be the same and they just enjoyed being who they are. That’s a good message to hold on to and “Cocoon” helps me to remember to enjoy who I am while I’m here.

Parenthood

This film represents all there is to being a parent. It scary and fun at the same time being a parent and this film could be a template for any future parents. Its also a trip down memory lane for any parent whose children have flown the “coop”.

Frost/Nixon

Frost/Nixon was one of the best political movies of the decade.

A Beautiful Mind. The movie

A Beautiful Mind. The movie ceases to amaze me. The way the movie was produced and directed was great. And to see the way a man can go through life being so brilliant and having all of these other issues along with it. Working in healthcare, I think it is even more appealing to me than to most others.

Ron Howard

Apollo 13. It was the first movie I can remember that I watched with my parents in a serious and mature manner. It was a great memory of growing up.

Which Ron Howard film means the most to you and why?

A Beautiful Mind. It is a remarkable story about the descent into and rise again from madness of a mathematical genius. Russell Crowe’s character, John Nash, manages to pull himself out of madness not by getting rid of his hallucinations but by learning to use his powerful mind to distinguish between objective reality and his hallucinations, which he continues to perceive. The movie presents a unique take on both genius and madness. Ron Howard’s work in this film is brilliant. The main action of the movie takes place in Nash’s mind, and it is not a simple thing to make what goes on in a person’s mind compelling on film.

A Beautiful Mind

My favorite Ron Howard’s film is A Beautiful Mind. It is such a powerful film that depicts a brilliant mathematician with a severely troubled mind. Being in the field of mental health, I am deeply touched by the film.

Backdraft - It gave me a renewed respect & appreciation for what a firefighter does on the job. Additionally, the film local (Chicago) gave it extra points as my fav.

" A Beautiful Mind "

Watching little opie on The Andy Griffin Show who new? Later, enjoying the laughs of Happy Days, again, who new? Ron Howard has learned his trade and applied it wisely in my humble opinion. He has given us a great body of work to make us think and challegne our beliefs. Be it Apollo 13, Cocoon, or the blue collar Backdraft, its real people and real lives. My favorite of course would be A Beautiful Mind, subject matter all to often pushed in the dark corners of our society with some of its wicked histories. Thanks to Ron Howard and other directors(Shutter Island) for shinning a bright on how we treat the criminal insane……opps, I ment to say the mentally ill.
