Mary-Arrchie Theatre Co. Presents BEGGARS IN THE HOUSE OF PLENTY by John Patrick Shanley

THE CHICAGO PREMIER PRODUCTION

In this deeply autobiographical work, Tony and Pulitzer Prize Winner John Patrick Shanley tackles his past. A surreal comedy, packed with the wit, insight, confusion, laughter and pain that only family can bring. At once vulgar, poetic and brutally honest, Johnny leads us on a journey through his childhood in the Bronx of the mid-1950’s to the turbulent late 60’s and finally the perspective of his adulthood.

“…Painfully funny…a memory play that is like Eugene O’Neill as seen through the eyes of a Tennessee Williams influenced by Eugene Ionesco.” -NY Post.

“…funny and profoundly painful at the same time…a play to be seen more than once.” -Chelsea Journal.

Directed by Kevin Christopher Fox and features Carlo Lorenzo Garcia, Mary Jo Bolduc, Karl Potthoff, Shannon Clausen, Daniel Behrendt, and Laura Shatkus.

On May 4, 2008 at 3 p.m. at Facets Cinematheque (1517 W. Fullerton in Chicago), Jonathan Rosenbaum’s passage from his longtime tenure at the Chicago Reader will be celebrated. They say:

Quote:For decades, esteemed critic Jonathan Rosenbaum redefined film criticism and often pushed audiences to recognize challenging work. His sometimes controversial stance on issues has fostered public debate and served to make films the epicenter of artistic discourse.

At that event, Milos Stehlik (Facets executive director) and Charles Coleman (Facets Cinematheque film program director) will have a discussion with Rosenbaum about why “film continues to be so important in our lives”. The event is free for facets members and $5 for non-members.

For advance registration, call 773-281-9075 or go to http://www.facets.org/cinematheque.

Audiences will be taken “to an uncanny sideshow of longing and desire where all manner of monstrosities are revealed and reveled in, and nothing is forbidden,” said Tantalus Theatre Group’s Artistic Director, Glen Cullen. Given the nature of Dreadful Penny’s Exquisite Horrors’ content, audience discretion is advised. The variety-show style production aims to cut to the audiences’ proverbial core through the acts presented by Dreadful Penny, the manipulatively seductive emcee. Dreadful Penny’s Exquisite Horrors will be presented on Fridays and Saturdays at 10:30 p.m. in the Loft at the Bailiwick Arts Center, located at 1229 W. Belmont Ave. in Chicago, IL 60657, from February 8th through March 29th.

Tickets
Tickets to Dreadful Penny’s Exquisite Horrors are $10 for the general public and $7 for students.
Group rates are also available for $8 a person with a six person minimum. Reservations can be made by phone at 773-428-9977 and online at http://www.tantalustheatre.org/reservations.php beginning on February 1st. I Like You: Hospitality Under the Influence.

Thursday April 10th
6:30 to 10:30pm
The Chicago Cultural Center - 78 E. Washington St.
$100 (c’mon, it’s for charity)
Call 773-761-4477 for tickets or purchase online.

It’s our 25th Anniversary, so we’re celebrating in style! Join Amy for a live demonstration on partying the “Amy Way.” Ask her your most intimate hospitality questions. Buy her book—she’ll sign it! Drinking, dining and glorious silent auction are, of course, included. Make sure your pantyhose are on straight, please.

Amy Sedaris has appeared often on screen, both large and small, and lives in Manhattan. She’s co-creator, with Stephen Colbert and Paul Dinello, of Comedy Central’s hit show Strangers with Candy, and half of the Obie-winning “Talent Family” playwright team (with her brother, David). For more information about Amy, visit www.amysedarisrocks.com

Amy’s Lifeline Theatre connections include Second City touring with Lifeline ensemble member John Hildreth. Lifeline artistic director Dorothy Milne owes Amy thanks for inviting her to write and perform a piece for Help, Daddy, directed by Mick Napier at the (old) Annoyance Theatre in 1992, which was Dorothy’s initiation into the solo performance arena, and resulted in her creation of the writing/performing collective, Sweat Girls.

The evening also includes a sword fight from The Mark of Zorro, cocktail piano by George Howe, food and drink by Conn’s Catering and a silent auction. Confirmed auction items include airline tickets, plus a Frank Gehry 3-Fish drop pendant, exclusively from Tiffany & Co.
