DONE! New HollywoodChicago.com feature: 'book' system for related pages within articles

Users have requested a smarter system for “related pages” within HollywoodChicago.com articles. The purpose of this feature is so you can easily see related content when you’re done reading one article.

While we’ve been doing some related links manually within articles, we have installed a new “book system” to more intelligently link relevant content. One article becomes the main page of a book. We then relate other articles to it and have them be additional pages of the book.

So we can see what this looks like, I’ve just classified various articles as books. The overall book system on HC is now at http://www.hollywoodchicago.com/book. Those links are articles I’ve made as parent books.

At the bottom of the parent book articles (right after the Digg image), you’ll see links to other pages in the book as well as a link to go to the next relevant page in the book. Once you flip forward, you can then flip back, forward again or to the parent page (like on our discussion forums).

An especially good example of what the book system can do can be found here. In that book, we’ve related all exclusive HollywoodChicago.com celebrity portraits to one another.

Page Numbers and First and Last on Forum Thread

Hello—

Can you add the “FIRST/LAST, NEXT/PREV, and page numbers” to the top of the forum comments so I don’t have to scroll to the bottom to get to the next or last page?

IMPROVED! Added tags in image galleries for actors, films

Going forward, photos in our image galleries will be tagged with the relevant actor/actress names and films like the other sections of the site.

We will also be adding the person’s name in the headline and body so you have more information about the image. See here for an example!

IMPROVED! Right-bar 'currently in discussion' threads now sort by last comment

I have improved the right-bar “currently in discussion” block displayed throughout the site so it now sorts by the last user comment instead of the discussion forum creation date.

In the previous scenario, you’d create a new forum and it’d go to the top of the list. The creation of new forums would then bump it down. When a comment was made, though, the thread didn’t get bumped back to the top to easily show you it was the last thread receiving a comment.

Now making a new comment on a thread will bump it to the top. You can also see all new system content activity using this handy-dandy tracker (a MUST-USE tool for the site to keep up with what’s changing)!

DONE! Users can now upload images in forum posts

Many people have asked for it to be easier for you to upload images within discussion forum posts. You now can with relative ease.

You’ll see a new “File attachments” option at the bottom of your screen when you’re creating a new forum post. Click it, browse to the image on your computer and click “Attach”.

The image will then upload to our server, and below it, you’ll see the full URL of the image on our server. Copy that URL and use this code to display the image:

DONE! Anonymous users can now add name, e-mail, URL with comments

Anonymous users who haven’t yet made a HollywoodChicago.com account can now optionally add their name, e-mail (that field won’t be shown publicly) and homepage URL along with their comment.
