Interview: Writer, Director Bobcat Goldthwait on ‘World’s Greatest Dad’ With Robin Williams

CHICAGO – Bobcat Goldthwait has made one of the most daring, unique, dark comedies of the year, the personal “World’s Greatest Dad,” starring Robin Williams, Alexie Gilmore, Daryl Sabara, and Henry Simmons. He recently sat down for a spirited conversation with HollywoodChicago.com about the response to his film, finding his own happiness, and why he hates acting.

“World’s Greatest Dad” stars Robin Williams as Lance Clayton, an aspiring writer stuck teaching poetry to kids who don’t care about and dealing with an obnoxious son (played by Daryl Sabara) and a younger girlfriend (Alexie Gilmore). It’s not hard to see some of Bobcat in Lance.

<img src="http://www.hollywoodchicago.com/sites/default/files/wgd2.jpg" width="640" height="427" alt="Robin Williams and Bobcat Goldthwait in WORLD’S GREATEST DAD, a Magnolia Pictures release." title=Robin Williams and Bobcat Goldthwait in WORLD’S GREATEST DAD, a Magnolia Pictures release.">
Robin Williams and Bobcat Goldthwait in WORLD’S GREATEST DAD, a Magnolia Pictures release.

Goldthwait says, "About a day in, Robin just goes, "I'm playing you." And I was like, "Yeah." There's a ton of Lance in me. I just spent a good portion of my adult life thinking "Oh, poor me. I'm not getting a break." I realized that none of these things that I was pursuing were going to ever really make me happy - relationships or work."

Robin Williams in WORLD’S GREATEST DAD, a Magnolia Pictures release.

“In my mind, Lance is writing for the wrong reasons,” Goldthwait says. “He’s trying to…To try and make stuff artistically and you’re thinking of how it’s going to affect other people and the repercussions is…well, I shouldn’t say that…trying to make art for fame and money and all that is really silly. Trying to make stuff to connect with other people is a valid way to make stuff.”

It took some time but Goldthwait has a very simple goal when he writes and directs - “I’m trying to make movies that I would go to.”

“If it works for other people, that’s awesome, but I spent most of my career just reacting to whatever was offered me or trying to pursue the things that Lance is trying to pursue - meet women and get rich. It doesn’t work and it’s not very fulfilling.”

Of course, Bobcat Goldthwait has been a part of the stand-up scene for decades and still gets recognized for his roles in the “Police Academy” movies. He had the fame that Lance Clayton is seeeking and admits that “It never felt right.” It wasn’t until he ditched the persona that once made him so famous that he found true comfort.

Goldthwait says, “I’m much happier. It’s funny. The cynical person who blogs or comments is going to say, “Well, he says he’s happier now but…” I read a comment that was like, “That’s what someone says when they’ve made mistakes and burned bridges and they’re not happy.” It’s like, “No, I’m happier now pursuing the things that make me happy.” If you’ve convinced yourself that making money makes you happy, it doesn’t. In our culture, people aren’t really encouraged to be fulfilled.”

Alexie Gilmore, Robin Williams, and Zach Sanchez in WORLD’S GREATEST DAD, a Magnolia Pictures release.

“World’s Greatest Dad” is ultimately about a man who “grows up and doesn’t do what’s expected of him because he’s convinced himself that it would make him happy. The only reason that Lance is rewarded by the end is that he’s willing to be alone. That’s really scary to most people - the idea of being alone. And then the reward is that he ends up with people in his life who like him and are supportive.”

The film features Robin Williams’ best performance in years, although Goldthwait admits that he’s aware of the baggage an actor like Robin has in a film with a title like “World’s Greatest Dad”. And he’s not alone. Goldthwait says, “One of the nice byproducts of this movie is that people have a perception of me that I’m doing my best to change but people also have a perception of Daryl [Sabara], Robin, Bruce Hornsby [who has an amazing cameo]…it’s fun to say, “You know, it ain’t over.””

Goldthwait admits that he’d be happy if he never acted again, finding much more fulfillment in writing and directing. As for acting, he says, “I don’t enjoy it but I also feel that I don’t think that it’s what I’m strong at. I think there are a lot of people that are talented.”

Director Bobcat Goldthwait on the set of WORLD’S GREATEST DAD, a Magnolia Pictures release.

As a writer/director, Bobcat is “trying to perpetuate a trust” with people who liked his last few films. When asked who has developed that trust with him, he cites all writer/directors - P.T. Anderson, Wes Anderson, Quentin Tarantino, The Coen Brothers - “All people who have a voice. I admire them. I get excited to watch their new stuff.”

Goldthwait still hits the road and does stand-up “to pay bills” but if you head out to see him, don’t expect to see the same old Bobcat. “…recently I killed the character. And, by the way, if you’re in the heartland and people come to see you do that? It’s like being at a Poison reunion tour and not hearing “Every Rose Has Its Thorn”. There’s gonna be disgruntled audience members.”

“I named a CD this because it was true. I did have a woman say, “I don’t mean to insult you, but you look like Bobcat Goldthwait.” A lot of people when they come up to me in an airport, they’re unsure that it’s me. And I do often hear, second hand, that people think I’m dead.”

Bobcat Goldthwait is definitely not dead. His film, “World’s Greatest Dad,” opens today, September 4th, 2009, in Chicago

‘World’s Greatest Dad’ stars Robin Williams, Alexie Gilmore, Daryl Sabara, and Henry Simmons. It was written and directed by Bobcat Goldthwait. It opens on September 4th, 2009. It is rated R.

‘Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian’ is Predictable, Clustered Drivel

CHICAGO – The sequel “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian” is, presumably, an effort by director Shawn Levy (“Night at the Museum” in 2006 and “The Pink Panther”) and writers Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon (who both wrote the first film) to weave together an exciting and educational film.

Rating: 2.0/5.0

After all, the concept remains clever and plot endless in possibilities. Museum exhibits come to life through ancient magic with wildlife running amuck, significant historical figures repossessed and left to interact as well as all sorts of artifacts renewed and at the disposal of all.

Add to this formula a knockout cast – with Ben Stiller, Amy Adams, Owen Wilson, Hank Azaria, Robin Williams, Steve Coogan, Ricky Gervais, Bill Hader and Jonah Hill – and one can expect hilarity and stimulation.

Instead, the filmgoer will quite amazingly find little engagement in this movie and instead will be confronted with a predictable, “when’s it going to end?” storyline that amounts to little but clustered drivel. The opposite of stimulating, the film simply numbs and dumbs the mind.

Read Elizabeth Oppriecht’s full review of “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian” in our reviews section.

Upon opening, we find that former museum guard Larry Daley (Ben Stiller) has left his job at the Museum of Natural History to pursue a more lucrative career: inventor and infomercial personality.

It becomes clear through rushed and skipped-about scenes that he’s unfulfilled in his new life and is quickly led back to wander the halls of his former museum-guard dwellings.

Upon his return to the Museum of Natural History, Larry finds that the majority of the exhibits he came to know in the original “Night at the Museum” are being shipped for storage in the basement of the Smithsonian.

“Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian,” which stars Ben Stiller, Amy Adams, Owen Wilson, Hank Azaria, Robin Williams, Steve Coogan, Ricky Gervais, Bill Hader and Jonah Hill from director Shawn Levy and writers Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon, opened everywhere on May 22, 2009. The film is rated PG for mild action and brief language.

Slideshow: 29-Image Gallery For ‘Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian’

CHICAGO – This 29-image slideshow contains the official press images for “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian” starring Ben Stiller, Amy Adams, Owen Wilson, Steve Coogan, Robin Williams, Ricky Gervais, Bill Hader, Hank Azaria, and Christopher Guest. The film, written by Thomas Lennon & Robert Ben Garant and directed by Shawn Levy, opens on May 22nd, 2009.

Synopsis:

“Night has fallen upon the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC. The guides have gone home, the lights are out, the school kids are tucked in their beds … yet something incredible is stirring as former night guard Larry Daley (Ben Stiller) finds himself lured into his biggest, most imagination-boggling adventure yet in which history truly comes alive. In this second installment of the Night at the Museum saga, Larry faces a battle so epic it could only unfold in the corridors of the world’s largest museum. Now, Larry must try to save his formerly inanimate friends from what could be their last stand amid the wonders of the Smithsonian, all of which, from the famous paintings on the walls to the rocket ships in the halls, suddenly have a mind of their own.”

DVD Review: ‘Sam Kinison Unleashed’ Brings Comic Genius to DVD

DVD Rating: 3.5/5.0

CHICAGO – Anyone who has ever seen a Sam Kinison stand-up special knows the truth. The man was a genius. Finally, people unfamiliar with the mad preacher will get to see for themselves and those of us old enough to remember Kinison’s all-too-brief time in the spotlight can revisit this inspirational and hilarious comedian on DVD with “Sam Kinison Unleashed”.

The release from the small company Mill Creek Entertainment includes both of Sam’s HBO specials, “Breaking the Rules” from 1987 and “Family Entertainment Hour” from 1991 with never-before-seen footage which is released for the first time on DVD. Kinison would die just a year later in a car accident. I firmly believe that if he was still alive, he’d be rocking audiences with his trademark brand of humor to this day.

Sam Kinison: Unleashed was released by Mill Creek Entertainment on January 27th, 2009.

Don’t believe me? Watch these two specials, three hours of entertainment that has lost none of its comedic power in the two decades since the first comedy hour was produced. With quotes of admiration on the back of the DVD from Robin Williams, Jay Leno, and Johnny Carson, Kinison was widely adored by his peers. And all good Howard Stern fans know how unbelievably funny the man could be on Stern’s show. He was creative, powerful, and always interesting.

Sam made frequent appearances on Howard Stern, “Saturday Night Live,” and “In Living Color,” and even has his own short-lived show, “Charlie Hoover”. Only seven episodes were produced. When’s that coming out on DVD?

Sam was a comedy rock star. He could fill arenas and play with bands like Motley Crue, Guns n’ Roses, and Ozzy Osbourne. He made music videos and dated Jessica Hahn. He was to comedy what Ted Nugent was to rock - a little crazy but impossible to ignore. Sam was a hard-drinking, hard-partying, angry s.o.b. He cleaned up his life near the end and even got married. Most people think Kinison’s days were cut short by his own demons, but it was actually a head-on collision with teenaged drunk driver that stole this talent from us way too early.

How influential was Sam Kinison? I swear this is not a lie. While writing this review, he was just mentioned on the radio during an interview with another stand-up comic. How many comedians still resonate like that almost two decades after they died?

Find out why with these two stand-up specials.

Now, my love for Sam is clear, but “Sam Kinison Unleashed” is a little lackluster as a release. Just having these HBO specials on DVD is great, but the video and audio could have been remastered a little bit better and there’s not a single special feature to speak of.

With all of the quotes about Sam’s influence on the back of the DVD, couldn’t they have strung together a retrospective featurette? Mill Creek is releasing more Kinison material later in the year, including the documentary “Brother Sam,” but it would have been nice to have a special feature or two on the first DVD of the master. The best way to look at “Unleashed” is that this is just the start of a year of Kinison releases, not the complete picture.

‘Sam Kinison: Unleashed’ is released by Mill Creek Entertainment. It was released on January 27th, 2009.

By BRIAN TALLERICO
Content Director
HollywoodChicago.com
brian@hollywoodchicago.com
