Blu-Ray Review: Great Release For ‘Megamind’ With Will Ferrell, Tina Fey

CHICAGO – DreamWorks’ “Megamind” features a fantastic voice cast (one of the best of 2010) and will play very well to legions of rugrats over the next few years, but it’s a film that might leave their parents shrugging their shoulders in disappointment. With three of the best animated films ever made hitting theaters last year (“Toy Story 3,” “How to Train Your Dragon,” “The Illusionist”) along with quality alternatives (“Despicable Me,” “Tangled”), it’s likely that “Megamind” will appropriately get lost in the mix of history when people talk about this era of the medium.

Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0

Like “Despicable Me,” the title character in “Megamind” (Will Ferrell) learns that being a bad guy isn’t as much fun as being a good one. It’s interesting that with so many real-life corporate villains, Hollywood is telling stories of powerful men learning lessons about evil. In the case of “Megamind,” as in so many super hero stories, the good barely outweighs the bad (although a Blu-ray with spectacular technical specs and incredible special features tips the scales a bit more).

Voice work goes a long way in a project like this and “Megamind” had one of the most interesting voice casts of 2010 — Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill, and David Cross. You can’t get a much-more-talented crew than that even if the way they’re brought to life isn’t as visually interesting or creative as one would hope.

Megamind was released on Blu-Ray and DVD on February 25th, 2011

In many ways, the opening scenes of “Megamind” are the most creative as the big blue guy details his long-running feud with his heroic counterpart Metroman (Pitt). On the occasion of the opening of the Metroman Museum in the center of Metro City, Megamind stages yet another kidnapping of the beautiful Roxie (Fey) in an attempt to lure Metroman into another trap. To everyone’s surprise, his plan finally works and Metroman ends up dead.

Megamind was released on Blu-Ray and DVD on February 25th, 2011

After taking over the city and wreaking cartoonish havoc with his pal Minion (David Cross), Megamind realizes that a villain without a hero is a yin without a yang. He decides to try and create a hero to complete him and bring meaning to his life again. Using a bit of Metroman’s remaining DNA, he accidentally infuses superhero powers into a slob of a cameraman named Hal (Jonah Hill), turning him into Titan. Of course, Megamind learns that the definition of hero or villain can’t just be placed on someone. It’s about what’s inside.

The main reason to see “Megamind” beyond the bright, pretty colors that can serve as a babysitter for your kid is the voice work by Ferrell and Fey. Will imbues Megamind with a spectacularly bizarre accent and Fey is remarkably genuine. Hill and Cross have more personality in their voices than most. The voice cast is easily the best thing about “Megamind.”

I wish the script and the visual sense of the film were as praise-worthy. The story is a bit too predictable (and similar themes were explored more interestingly in “The Incredibles” and “Despicable Me”) and Metro City never quite comes to life, especially without 3D to drive it.

“Megamind” is eventually entertaining without being overly memorable. Of course, on Blu-ray, an entertaining kids movie goes a long way. It’s only when one considers that we are in a golden age of animation that simple entertainment can be considered disappointing.

There’s nothing disappointing about the Blu-ray release, which features a 15-minute short film, trivia track, commentary, animator’s corner, and much more. And it looks spectacular. This is the best family Blu-ray release in terms of sheer quantity of product of 2011 to date. And, sometimes, when it comes to keeping your kid busy, more is definitely better.

Special Features:
o Megamind: The Button Of Doom - Megamind and Minion return to battle an even bigger foe in this all-new Mega comedy adventure!
o Enhance the movie-viewing experience with the animators’ corner featuring picture-in-picture storyboards, behind-the-scenes footage and interviews
o Uncover more Megamind facts with the trivia track
o Put your own hilarious twist on scenes from the film with the Interactive Comic Creator
o Meet the Cast
o Discover the Lost Scene
o Visit Megamind’s Lair
o Unleash The Reign of Megamind Video Comic Book

‘Megamind’ stars Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Jonah Hill, David Cross, and Brad Pitt. It was written by Alan J. Schoolcraft & Brent Simons and directed by Tom McGrath. It was released on Blu-ray and DVD on February 25th, 2011.
Blu-Ray Review: Great Release For Enjoyable ‘Despicable Me’

CHICAGO – Every critic has a few films in their resume that they were arguably too hard on. Coming on the heels of the beautiful “How to Train Your Dragon” and the masterful “Toy Story 3,” “Despicable Me” felt a bit too thin in theaters but it plays great at home, bolstered by a spectacular Blu-ray release from Universal.

Blu-Ray Rating: 4.0/5.0

“Despicable Me” isn’t nearly as ambitious as “HTTYD” or “TS3” but that seems like an unfair comparison. Movies should be judged by their intentions and this light, breezy, sometimes-clever comedy works on its own terms. It’s an impossible movie to fully adore and you won’t see it on any best of the year lists but it’s also a tough movie to hate. There’s room in the animation genre for films that aren’t as deep or rich as “Toy Story 3” or “The Illusionist” and “Despicable Me” gets the job done.

Steve Carell (who had one of the busiest years ever with “Date Night,” “Dinner For Schmucks,” and “The Office”) voices the super-evil Gru, a bad guy who seems to be losing the race for world’s greatest villain with upstart Vector (Jason Segel). Vector is off stealing pyramids while Gru is just using his freeze ray to cut the line at Starbucks. Even with his hundreds of minions (adorable creatures surely designed for sale as stuffed animals that look vaguely like Twinkies with eyes and feet), Gru is becoming irrelevant. So Gru hatches a plan to steal the moon. Yes, THAT moon. He’ll take a shrink ray into outer space, zap the moon, and carry it home in his astronaut suit.

Despicable Me was released on Blu-ray and DVD on December 14th, 2010

The problems start when Gru learns that Vector has the shrink ray and Gru’s plan for universal domination requires it. Gru decides to exploit the gawky mad man’s love for the cookies sold door to door by orphan little girls and adopts three awfully cute sisters – Margo (Miranda Cosgrove), Agnes (Elsie Fisher), and Edith (Dana Gaier) – and tries to use them as he does his minions with, of course, Grinch-esque heart-melting results. Gru bonds with the girls and realizes that the people in his life – a pressuring coconspirator named Dr. Nefario (Russell Brand) and a truly evil mother (Julie Andrews) – haven’t exactly been supporting him the way a super-villain should be supported.

Some of the design aesthetic of “Despicable Me” reminds me of modern French animation (I wish there was more) and the best physical bits reminds one of Mad Magazine’s Spy vs. Spy. The film is forced to go through some pretty cliched machinations as it reveals that the super-villain is really a good guy at heart and it does lose focus a few times, but Blu-ray (and non-3D) plays up the visual strengths of the film. It was made for HD.

And it was made for the home market. The cost of taking a family to the theaters to see a 3D movie with parking and food can easily break three figures. It’s insane. But downloading or buying this mild diversion on a winter afternoon creates a different set of standards. Overall, “Despicable Me” is missing that X factor that takes a light comedy like this one and makes it into something more (although I wouldn’t be surprised if a sequel kicked on more cylinders) but the Blu-ray is stunning.

What’s so great about it? Universal has long been a leader in the world of live-action HD but their limited animated catalog hasn’t given them a chance to show what they can do with a colorful CGI flick like “Despicable Me.” It’s beautiful. And it sounds just as good.

Not only are the tech specs above average but so are the special features. DVD-exclusive shorts have long been mere filler to get more kids to demand their parents buy them the new release but the three mini-movies on “Despicable Me” are actually pretty clever. And the film is LOADED with special features, including the great Gru-Control (a play on the company’s U-Control), which features what are essentially shorts of the minions, Gru, and others interrupting the movie along with behind-the-scenes featurettes. The special features are lengthy, informative, and fun.

Special Features:
o 3 All New Mini-Movies: Orientation Day, Home Makeover, Banana
o The World of Despicable Me
o Despicable Beats
o Gru’s Rocket Builder
o Miss Hattie’s Top Secret Cookie Recipes
o Commentary with the Director & the Minions
o The Voices of Despicable Me
o Super Silly Fun Land
o DVD Feature Film and Bonus Digital Copy of the Film
o Gru-Control
o Pocket Blu

“Despicable Me” stars Steve Carell, Jason Segel, Russell Brand, Julie Andrews, Will Arnett, Kristen Wiig, Miranda Cosgrove, Dana Gaier, and Elsie Fisher. It was written by Ken Daurio and directed by Pierre Coffin & Chris Renaud. It was released by Universal on December 14th, 2010. It is rated PG and runs 95 minutes.

Film Review: ‘Megamind’ With Will Ferrell, Brad Pitt Barely Wins Animated Fight

CHICAGO – Being a super-villain is apparently going out of style as “Megamind” follows relatively quickly on the heels of “Despicable Me” and both tell the story of a bad guy realizing that it’s more fun to be good. The title character of “Megamind” (Will Ferrell) is a nefarious super-powered fellow who has just barely lost every fight he’s had with the beloved Metroman (Brad Pitt). It seems appropriate that the film about them is also a marginal affair in which the good just barely outweighs the bad.

Rating: 3.0/5.0

Stellar voice talent goes a long way in overcoming what is essentially a pretty lackluster script hampered even further by mediocre character and environment design. To put it another way, “Megamind” doesn’t have that memorable a story and isn’t as visually creative as it should be but you can’t find actors much better at this kind of material than Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill, and David Cross.

Read Brian Tallerico’s full review of “Megamind” in our reviews section.

The opening act details the history of Megamind and Metroman, life-long nemeses sent to Earth in a sequence that clearly parodies the opening act of “Superman.” Through what is essentially luck, the perfectly-coifed, good-looking guy becomes the superhero and the ugly, blue, bald dude becomes the super-villain. On the occasion of the opening of the Metroman Museum in the center of Metro City, Megamind stages yet another kidnapping of the beautiful Roxie (Tina Fey) in an attempt to lure Metroman into another trap. To everyone’s surprise, his plan finally works and Metroman ends up dead.

Continue reading for Brian Tallerico’s full “Megamind” review.

‘Megamind’ stars Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Jonah Hill, David Cross, and Brad Pitt. It was written by Alan J. Schoolcraft & Brent Simons and directed by Tom McGrath. It opens on November 5th, 2010. It is rated PG.

Film Review: ‘Despicable Me’ With Steve Carell Falls Short of World Domination

CHICAGO – “Despicable Me” is a mildly entertaining diversion on a summer afternoon. It’s a film that’s as equally difficult to hate as it is to love — kind of like its morally complex lead Gru (Steve Carell) — that falls just short of animation domination.

Rating: 3.0/5.0

It’s certainly possible that yet another summer masterpiece from Pixar (“Toy Story 3”) has made me cynical about animation from other studios but, to this viewer, “Despicable Me” doesn’t follow through on its clever opening act. That’s when we meet Gru, a super-villain who hasn’t recently pulled off a feat more impressive than stealing the Statue of Liberty from in front of New York, New York in Las Vegas. When his competition, the younger Vector (Jason Segel), silently lifts the pyramids of Egypt, Gru knows its time to do something more daring that merely freeze-raying the people ahead of him in line at Starbucks or face irrelevance.

Read Brian Tallerico’s full review of “Despicable Me” in our reviews section.

With the help of his minions — Twinkie-shaped, yellow creatures with eyes and limited vocabularies that should sell well at toy stores through the year — and Dr. Nefario (Russell Brand), Gru hatches a plan to steal the moon. Yes, the entire moon. He’ll take a shrink ray into outer space, zap the moon, and carry it home in his astronaut suit. Small problem — Vector has the shrink ray Gru needs to finish the job.

To get the device so essential to his plan for universal domination, Gru plans to use the gawky super-villain’s love for cookies that are sold door-to-door by adorable orphan girls. So, he goes and adopts three awfully cute sisters – Margo (Miranda Cosgrove), Agnes (Elsie Fisher), and Edith (Dana Gaier) – and tries to use them as he does his minions. Of course, he also has to parent the wide-eyed waifs and ends up, obviously, falling in love with them. Gru may have never been supported by his truly awful mother (Julie Andrews) but that doesn’t mean he can’t be a super-parent.

Continuing reading for Brian Tallerico’s full “Despicable Me” review.

“Despicable Me” features voice work by Steve Carell, Jason Segel, Russell Brand, Julie Andrews, Will Arnett, Kristen Wiig, Miranda Cosgrove, Dana Gaier, and Elsie Fisher. It was written by Ken Daurio and directed by Pierre Coffin & Chris Renaud. It is rated PG and opens on July 9th, 2010.

Slideshow: 24-Image Gallery For ‘Despicable Me’ Starring Steve Carell

CHICAGO – This 24-image slideshow contains a selection of the official press images for the highly anticipated “Despicable Me,” featuring voice work by Steve Carell, Jason Segel, Russell Brand, Kristen Wiig, Will Arnett, Danny McBride, Jack McBrayer, Miranda Cosgrove, and Julie Andrews. The film was written by Cinco Paul & Ken Daurio and directed by Chris Renaud & Pierre Coffin. It will be released on July 9th, 2010.

Synopsis: “In a happy suburban neighborhood surrounded by white picket fences and flowering rose bushes sits a black house with a dead lawn. Unbeknownst to the neighbors, hidden deep beneath this home is a vast secret hideout. Surrounded by an army of mischievous yellow minions, we discover Gru (Steve Carell) planning the biggest heist in the history of the world. He is going to steal the moon (Yes, the moon!) in Universal’s new 3-D CGI feature, Despicable Me.

Gru delights in all things wicked. Armed with his arsenal of shrink rays, freeze rays and battle-ready vehicles for land and air, he vanquishes all who stand in his way.
