WEST CHICAGO, ILL. – The WC Social Club hosted emerging Indie Rock performers Each Day for a much needed night of live music and liquid refreshments. The talented and versatile band consists of Taylor Oechsel (lead vocals, rhythm guitar, main songwriter), Christopher Marszalek (drums, producer) Nick Stubblefield (lead guitar) and Mia Stubblefield (vocals).!—break—>
Taylor is an engaging and talented singer who commands the stage and connects emotionally with the audience through her lyrics, mannerisms and enchanting voice. On drums, Christopher’s infectious energy, upbeat attitude and obvious love of performing live reminds this concert reviewer of a drummer from a different genre, Tommy Lee of Mötley Crüe. Mia’s stoic presence and pristine voice complimented Taylor’s voice perfectly as they harmonized with Nick’s skilled guitar playing.
The lively audience knew the lyrics and sang along with several crowd favorites from Each Day, including the haunting (click the links) ”Merry Go Round” [18] the contemplative ”Loner” [19] and their new single ”Through the Woes” [20]. The future holds great things for the band, with plenty of gigs lined up and collaborations with some of the industry’s brightest minds. Through this journey, the band continues to follow their mission … help the world feel a little less lonely.
Music journalist Jeff Doles of HollywoodChicago.com got an opportunity to sit down with the band and talk about their vibe.
HollywoodChicago.com: How did Each Day evolve? And how would you characterize where you’re at today?
Christopher Marszalek: Each Day started as just a couple of old friends getting together to jam. Originally we just wanted to do some cover songs and get a change of pace from the other projects we were in. It didn’t take long for Nick and I to hear the potential in Taylor’s original songwriting and style. From there we decided to give it a real shot and write songs as a team. The music was raw, the lyrics were intriguing and we knew we had something special. We decided the mission for Each Day to be ‘help the world feel a little less lonely.’
We feel like our music and our live performances do just that. About a year into the project, Mia joined the band to provide some much welcomed harmonies and a vocal style that blends beautifully with Taylor’s. The first song we worked on was ‘Just Kidding, It’s Trust.’ Our latest is ‘Through The Woes.’ You can hear how we have evolved into a true ‘band,’ beyond just a singer/songwriter type of sound. The future looks bright for us. We have so many great songs in our pocket that we can’t wait to share with the world.
HollywoodChicago.com: There are marriages and relationships within the band. Do you think the personal connections positively influences and impacts the direction of your music?
Mia Stubblefield: In any creative situation, feeling connected to the people you are creating with is always beneficial. In our case, Nick and I are married, Christopher and Taylor are dating, Christopher and Nick have been life-long friends and the four of us care deeply for one another. This makes the process special for us and hopefully our fans feel that too. We are all tied together in our daily rhythm of life that we can share freely when we come together to create music.
Transparency of emotions makes for a great time in the studio and during band rehearsal. We hope Each Day can become a refuge for our fans to connect with their emotions as we share our emotional journey with them through lyrics, harmonies and musical representation.
HollywoodChicago.com: How does the band use music to convey the emotion that personally connects the audience to the experience?`
Christopher: Like I mentioned before, what we are really trying to do is help the world feel a little less lonely. We want to give people that reminder that they might not be the only person going through something. Our songwriting often starts with the lyrics. Each song is usually centered around a certain event in a relationship, or an idea to strive for more, or simply a retelling of a story.
Once lyrics are decided we try and take those stirred emotions and turn them into song. If the music can conjure the same emotions without the lyrics, then we feel we have done our job. If the audience can hear lyrics and hear music that evokes an emotional response, then maybe they will take a moment to really think about what they are hearing. Hopefully from there, they can realize they are not alone in this adventure of life.
HollywoodChicago.com: The new single ”Through the Woes” [20] has a timeless feel that transcends genre and classification. What inspired the song and what is the band’s process for creating new music?
Taylor Oechsel: When writing any song we tend to draw inspiration from other forms of art. I had recently started writing on my 12 string guitar, and I was starting to draw from bands like The Eagles and Dawes. I wanted to write something catchy and meaningful. When I took the lyrics to the band, that’s when it all came together. We decided on a classic chug on the drums. Something to give the song weight and momentum. We added in those harmonies that make the melody butter. The guitar hook came together quickly after the percussion was figured out.
For the rest of the day, we didn’t want to play anything other than ‘Through the Woes.’ When it comes to writing a song we can’t do it without the rest of the band. I may have written the structure to the song but this song would not be what it is without Christopher, Nick and Mia. We start with the rough bones and if anyone has lyrics or a melody, we start around that. Then we start to dissect the song. We can work on the muscle of the song and have a demo worked out. Then adding in the little touches that make the song unique and powerful. We work so well together and we all connect on a level that we can understand the direction where we want to take a song.
HollywoodChicago.com: Finally, how did you remain connected to your audience during the pandemic, and what does the future hold for Each Day?
Mia: Despite the fact that quarantine can create the sense of isolation as we are separated from those we love, including our fans, Each Day has made it a point to use this temporary ‘norm’ to develop our sound, strengthen our bond as a band and reach out to fans to see how they are doing regularly. It has pushed us to find ways to let fans know that they are still on our minds.
Luckily, social media, email updates and most importantly our MUSIC have allowed us to feel connected regardless of our circumstance. We find that having a perspective that is positive makes all the difference in the daily ups and downs of quarantine life. We plan on continuing our social media posts to keep everyone in the loop for new songs that are on the way and hopefully more music will flow out of us to keep our connection strong with our awesome fanbase!
