Podtalk: Dacre Montgomery & Cary Elwes on ‘Stranger Things 3’

CHICAGO – Season Three of “Stranger Things,” one of the hottest TV series in the last couple of years, is launching on Netflix on July 4th, 2019. The series is going back to the world of Indiana and the “Upside Down,” and joining the cast – which includes Dacre Montgomery as Billy Hargrove – is veteran actor Cary Elwes.

Set in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, in the 1980s, the series – created by twin brothers Matt and Ross Duffer – first focused (Season One) on the investigation into the 1983 disappearance of a young boy named Jonathan (Charlie Heaton) amid supernatural events occurring around the town, including the appearance of a girl (Millie Bobby Brown) with psychokinetic abilities who helps the missing boy’s friends (Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo and Caleb McLaughlin) in their own search.

The second season – which introduced Dacre Montgomery’s character of Billy Hargrove – was set one year later during Halloween 1984, and dealt with attempts of the characters to return to whatever normal means, given the reemergence of Jonathan and the discovery of a parallel world (the “Upside Down”). When we last left Hawkins, everything seemed neatly back in order. Or was it? “Stranger Things 3” will take place in 1985, and will introduce Cary Elwes as Mayor Larry Kline.

Dacre Montgomery knows about the land down under, having started his performance career in his native Australia. His major feature debut in America was as the Red Ranger in the rebooted “Power Rangers.” He got the part of Billy Hargrove through an audition video, which featured him dancing to 1980s music. Billy Hargrove was the new kid in Hawkins who causes problems because he’s not happy to be there, and his sister Max (Sadie Sink) also stirred things up with Jonathan and his friends.



Cary Elwes is a British-born actor who made his major film debut in 1984’s “Oxford Blues, and has appeared in several classic films of the last generation, including “The Princess Bride,” “Robin Hood: Men in Tights” “Glory,” “Days of Thunder,” “Hot Shots!,” “Ella Enchanted” and “Saw.” His recent television work included “Psych” and the Crackle TV series “The Art of More.” He also co-wrote the screenplay and produced the 2014 film “Elvis & Nixon,” the story of that iconic 1970 meeting.
