Sophia Wong Boccio is a veteran in Chicago cinema, beginning with the Chicago International Film Festival, where she was Managing Director for seven years. She began Asian Pop-Up Cinema (APUC) in 2015, splitting Spring and Fall in separate “seasons.” Through determination and tenacity, Sophia has built APUC into not only a cultural event, but as a films series which brings a quality perspective on universal issues and experiences. It just didn’t start with the recent “Crazy Rich Asians,” but Sophia appreciates its influence on Asian films and APUC.
Season Seven of APUC, which runs from September 12th through November 14th, 2018, will highlight films from South Korea, the Philippines, China, Thailand, India, Hong Kong, Japan, Tibet, Vietnam and Taiwan. The Opening Night film is the North American premiere of “Adulthood,” with appearances by director Kim In-seon and star Lee Jae-in. Spotlight presentations occur at the AMC River East 21 in downtown Chicago, with other various locations for special events, in addition to a number of free screenings.
In PART ONE of the Podtalk with Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com, Sophia Wong Boccio talks about the impact of “Crazy Rich Asians” and the highlights for Season Seven of APUC.
In PART TWO, Sophia talks about the legacy of her parents in the Hong Kong film industry, and her own evolution in context with APUC.
