Podtalk: Cast of Netflix's ‘Orange is the New Black' on Season Six Download for July 27, 2018

CHICAGO – Orange Day is Friday (July 27, 2018)… as in “Orange is the New Black.” That’s when Season Six will be available for download from Netflix, as the online series continues to showcase the women inmates at Litchfield Penitentiary, three of whom are played by Taylor Schilling (Piper), Kate Mulgrew (Red) and Dascha Polanco (Daya).

The three actors came to Chicago to promote “Orange is the New Black” (also known as OITNB) as it keeps its status as a go-to download, and is often cited as the first “binge” series in TV history. Created by Jenji Kohan, the multiple award-winning series revolves around Piper Chapman (Schilling), a woman in her 30s who is sentenced to minimum security prison at the fictional Litchfield. She was railroaded into the joint by her on-again-off-again lover Alex (Laura Prepon), and her indictment and imprisonment has been the catalyst for exploring the lives inside Litchfield for five seasons. Veteran actor Kate Mulgrew is Red, the former kitchen matron whose life keeps spiraling downward, and Dascha Polanco is the mercurial Daya, whose mother was also in prison with her, and who also had a daughter while incarcerated.

Taylor Schilling has taken off as a name actor as a result of Piper, and has been featured in many indie films, including “The Overnight,” “Take Me” and this year’s “Family.” Kate Mulgrew was best known before OITNB as Captain Kathryn Janeway in “Star Trek: Voyager,” and Dascha Polanco has spread her acting wings beyond OITNB with the films “The Cobbler” and “Joy.”
