CHICAGO – Leave it to acerbic comedian Denis Leary to cut through our times with a new book, “Why We Don’t Suck,” which is subtitled “And How All of Us Need to Stop Being Such Partisan Little Bitches.” Whether he is the man to stop it all remains to be seen, but he was in Chicagoland in early November to promote the book through Anderson’s Bookshop.
Denis Colin Leary was born in Worchester, Massachusetts, and graduated from Emerson College in nearby Boston. After graduation, he began working his way up the comedy ladder in clubs around Boston. He broke out nationally on MTV, working on “Remote Control” and other promotions for the channel. Noted for his cynical, caustic style of comedy, he later promoted that persona in successful comedy albums and books, including “No Cure for Cancer” and “Why We Suck”, in addition to films such as “The Ref” (1994), “Wag the Dog” (1997), “The Thomas Crown Affair” (1999), The “Ice Age” series of animated films and “The Amazing Spider-Man” (2012). His signature TV series is “Rescue Me,” portraying a firefighter in New York City post 9/11. Since doing the show, Leary has become an advocate for firefighters.
Photographer Joe Arce of HollywoodChicago.com shot these Exclusive Photos of Denis Leary as he appeared on behalf of “Why We Don’t Suck” at Wentz Hall at Central College in Naperville, Ill., in an event sponsored by Anderson’s Bookshop. Prior to the appearance, Leary met with local firefighters and first responders.
