CHICAGO – On August 22nd, 2017, the first slate of films were announced, and the official poster was revealed, for the upcoming 53rd Chicago International Film Festival. Festival Founder & CEO Michael Kutza unveiled the poster design, by artist Edwin Smeege, and Artistic Director Mimi Plauché gave the first sneak peek of films at the fest.
The 53rd edition of the Chicago International Film Festival will take place on October 12th-26th, 2017, and promises an exciting variety of 150 films from 50 countries. Included in the film announcement was “Goodbye Christopher Robin,” a British entry about Winnie-the-Pooh author A.A. Milne; “The Experimental City,” part of a partnership with the Chicago Architecture Biennial; the Black Perspectives Documentary, “Sammy Davis Jr.: I’ve Gotta Be Me”; the Polish film “Spoor,” by legendary director Agnieszka Holland; “Blade of the Immortal” a Japanese samurai entry into the After Dark program; and a U.S./British independent entry, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.” The full line-up of films will be announced on September 19th.
The poster reveal was part of a design competition that garnered close to 200 entries from all around the world. The theme of “Because Life is a Movie” was rendered in a voyeuristic interpretation by the artist Edwin Smeege, a self-taught pop artist from Germany. Multi-film passes and ticket information were also announced, with a code savings available for early birds through September 15th. The festival box office with open on September 20th at the AMC River East 21 Theater, 322 East Illinois, Chicago.
