Film News: Chicago Critics Film Festival Opens With ‘The Little Hours’ on May 12, 2017

CHICAGO – The only film festival in the U.S. programmed by a film critics group is right here in the Windy City, with the 5th Chicago Critics Film Festival (CCFF) taking place at the historic Music Box Theatre from May 12th through May 18th, 2017. The Opening Night film is “The Little Hours,” and features Aubrey Plaza and Kate Micucci, who will make an appearance on behalf of the film and participate in a Q&A.

“The Little Hours” is based on the first tale on the third day of “The Decameron,” a collection of novellas written by Gionvanni Boccaccio in…the 14th Century. Dave Franco stars as a young servant who is fleeing from his master (Nick Offerman) and takes refuge in a convent. Aubrey Plaza, Kate Micucci and Alison Brie portray participants of the convent, and the film also features John C. Reilly, Molly Shannon, Fred Armisten and Jermima Kirk. At press time, the screening was sold out, but standby tickets could become available right before show time.

The film kicks off the Chicago Film Critics Festival, a seven day celebration of cinema. The festival was created by the the Chicago Film Critics Association (CFCA) in 2013, and offers a selection of films comprised of recent festival favorites, a major revival and yet-to-be-distributed works from a wide variety of filmmakers – ranging from award winners to new films – all chosen by members of CFCA. Besides the full schedule of screenings and shorts programs (click on the link below), many of the presentations will have filmmaker or performer appearances, with audience Q&As to follow. The CCFF takes place at the Music Box Theatre on Chicago’s north side, which features an optimum atmosphere, lounge and beer garden for post screening revelry.
