Box Office News: ‘The Amazing Spider-man’ Drives Strong Box Office

CHICAGO – Whether or not it’s a hit depends on who you ask but Sony’s “The Amazing Spider-man” easily dominated the box office with $65 million over the three-day weekend and $140 million since it opened on July 3, 2012. Big numbers for sure but “Transformers” made $155.4 million in 2007 dollars over its first six days at the same time of year. They’d never admit it, but Sony is probably disappointed that they couldn’t crack $175 million.

To be fair, the first six days of “Spidey” destroyed other reboots like “Batman Begins” and “X-Men: First Class.” Yet, once again, it was lower than the first six days of any of Raimi’s films (significantly lower than the sequels). What will happen next? The strong CinemaScore grade (A-) and lack of competition next weekend should make for a reasonably strong second frame but one has to assume that “The Dark Knight Rises” is going to destroy it in two weeks.

Oliver Stone’s “Savages” pulled a reasonable 4th place opening in a season in which it never belonged (it should have been a Fall movie all along), making $16.2 million and breaking $6k per screen. The opening was in line with most Stone openings in recent years including “Wall Street 2” ($19 million) and “World Trade Center” ($18.7 million).

Finally, “Katy Perry: Part of Me” opened in 8th place with a pretty dismal $7.2 million. Woohoo.
