Blu-ray Review: Adam Sandler’s ‘Jack and Jill’ Sucks Twice as Much

CHICAGO – Adam Sandler has become such a lazy filmmaker that he’s now just building films around his personal vacation schedule. He wanted to take an outdoors-y vacation with his friends and the result was “Grown Ups.” He wanted to go to Hawaii and the result was “Just Go With It.” He wanted to take a cruise and we have to sit through “Jack and Jill.” While my personal choice for the worst film of 2011 was “Just Go With It” (I literally had to leave the screening to take a break when Nick Swardson gave CPR to a sheep), most people went with “Jack and Jill,” the film that features a cross-dressing Sandler as its primary punchline. “J&J” is bad. No doubt about it. I think even Sandler knows its bad. But it’s too dumb to be offensively bad. It’s just kind of there. You won’t laugh. It will end. And you’ll forget you ever saw it. Sandler’s already forgotten he made it. He’s too busy planning his next vacation.

The plot of “Jack and Jill”….oh, why bother? It’s about Sandler playing identical twins. One makes commercials. The other has the most annoying voice in years (there’s never been a silly-voiced Sandler character that worked…”Little Nicky” is even worse than this mess). Al Pacino pops up. Swardson makes his legally-mandated appearance. Katie Holmes looks lost. There are a few meager laughs, mostly courtesy of Pacino’s eagerness to go completely over-the-top and a cameo by Johnny Depp, which is a few more than “Just Go With It” or “Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star.” In the trifecta of horror from Happy Madison last year, this is the most tolerable simply by being the most forgettable. Let’s just hope Sandler’s next vacation is to wherever he lost his sense of humor.

Synopsis:
Jack Sadelstein (Adam Sandler), a successful advertising executive in Los Angeles with a beautiful wife (Katie Holmes) and kids, dreads one event each year: the holiday visit of his identical twin sister Jill (also Adam Sandler). Jill’s neediness and passive-aggressiveness are maddening to Jack, turning his normally tranquil life upside down. Things spin even more out of control for Jack when Jill decides to extend her visit-and he doesn’t think that she’ll ever leave!
