TV News: ‘The Kids Are Alright’ Being Written For an HBO Series

CHICAGO – The crossing over of entertainment forms is nothing new us and seems to come in phases. We have seen hundreds of books that were turned into movies. There have been TV shows like “Bewitched” “Get Smart” and “Charlie’s Angels” that were turned into movies. The latest craze in the cross-overs: films to television.

This year alone, we have seen several films green-lighted for a television series: “The Transporter,” “The Lincoln Lawyer,” “Anger Management,” and “The Source Code” have all been given approval to be made to TV. Now, a film a little bit different than the others is coming to HBO for its own television series.

“The Kids Are Alright,” the 2010 film about the chaos that comes up when a lesbian couple’s daughter goes out to find the surrogate father of herself and her brother. The film received praise from critics and was even nominated for Best Picture at last year’s Academy Awards.

The plan for the series, thus far, is that it will play on HBO, obviously allowing a little more room in the writing of the series. Lisa Cholodenko, who directed and co-wrote the original movie, is set to be writing the pilot episode of the series and will also take the reins of executive producing the series as well.

The plan for the series is to start up and take place immediately following the film. We will assume that the original cast, which included Annette Bening, Julianne Moore, and Mark Ruffalo, will not be participating in the TV series, which means an entire cast still needs to be found and the whole script to be written.

Don’t expect to see the TV series of “The Kids Are Alright” in the next few months, but fans of the film may just get even more story than the movie provided when the series eventually makes its way into HBO’s lineup.
