Blu-Ray Review: HD Release For Beloved ‘The Breakfast Club’

CHICAGO – People LOVE “The Breakfast Club.” It seems to have even jumped generations. While it likely still appeals most strongly to those of us who were at or near the age of the characters on the film’s initial release, John Hughes’ comedy seems to speak to something timeless about the high school experience. The 25th anniversary edition of “The Breakfast Club” on Blu-ray should be a hit.

Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0

Considering that the special features on “The Breakfast Club” Blu-ray have been available before on the standard DVD (in the “Flashback Edition” released in 2008), the big question is whether or not that those who own the latest release need to bother with an upgrade merely for the video and audio offered by HD. Probably not. The HD video picture looks just okay. It’s a bit muted and the overall picture looks soft, like there’s Vaseline on the lens instead of a proper remastering. It’s not a “bad” transfer but certainly not significantly better than an upconverted standard DVD.

So, “The Breakfast Club” on Blu-ray is for those of you who don’t already own one of the most beloved ’80s comedies or have worn out your original version. Everyone else can probably wait for the 30th anniversary. The movie will still be finding new generations of fans at that point and probably well-beyond it.
