TV Rumor: NBC Has Reportedly Renewed ‘Chuck’
Submitted by BrianTT on May 12, 2011 - 8:20amCHICAGO – We won’t know for sure until Sunday at the earliest (when NBC holds a press conference call about their official Monday fall schedule announcement), but several outlets are reporting that, drum roll please, “Chuck” is coming back. The annual bubble show that this critic predicted would get the death-sentence reprieve has been saved yet again.

Well, Kevin Reilly of FOX decided to burst all of the bubbles at his network under cover of night, as news broke very late last night that “The Chicago Code,” “Human Target,” “Lie To Me,” “Traffic Light,” and “Breaking In” will be absent from the upcoming 2011-12 schedule.

Blu-Ray Review: Original ‘Mortal Kombat’ Hits HD Timed With New Game
Submitted by BrianTT on May 11, 2011 - 12:54pmCHICAGO – The video game world of “Mortal Kombat” has been reinvigorated for a new generation through Warner’s excellent new release and the company wisely saw the opportunity to provide something for fans who need to put the controller down every once in a while but don’t want to leave the universe with Blu-ray releases for Paul Anderson’s “Mortal Kombat” and John R. Leonetti’s “Mortal Kombat: Annihilation.”
TV News: NBC Renews ‘Harry’s Law,’ Cancels ‘Law & Order: Los Angeles’
Submitted by BrianTT on May 11, 2011 - 9:05amWe got these two right. In our feature earlier this week predicting what would happen at the NBC Upfronts on Monday, we predicted that “Harry’s Law” would get a second season and that “Law & Order: Los Angeles” would not and this is exactly what TV By the Numbers is hearing has been made official (as has the expected pick-up of “Wonder Woman”).
Blu-Ray Review: Catherine Breillat’s ‘Fat Girl’ Proves Unforgettable
Submitted by mattmovieman on May 11, 2011 - 7:26amCHICAGO – So many films come and go without leaving a permanent imprint on one’s cinematic memory. Catherine Breillat’s galvanizing 2001 drama, “Fat Girl,” is most certainly not among them. I’ll never forget the profound level of shock and unease I felt during my initial viewing of the picture, which was eventually followed by a deep admiration of Breillat’s uncompromising bravery in tackling such disquieting material.

Video Game Review: ‘LEGO: Pirates of the Caribbean’ Rides the Seas
Submitted by BrianTT on May 10, 2011 - 2:35pmCHICAGO – Traveller’s Tales clearly seems 100% unconcerned about exhausting their “LEGO” brand as they have released “LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4,” “LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars,” and, now, “LEGO: Pirates of the Caribbean” in less than a year.

DVD Review: Jonathan Demme’s Brilliant ‘Something Wild’ Joins Criterion
Submitted by BrianTT on May 10, 2011 - 2:33pmCHICAGO – I love Jonathan Demme’s “Something Wild” with such passion that I can recommend the new Criterion Collection edition of the underrated ’80s classic and yet still realize that it’s something of a disappointment. Criterion leads the way in Blu-ray and DVD in every way, but even they can release editions that seem a bit lackluster, and such is the case with “Something Wild.” Pick it up because the movie rules, but don’t get your hopes too high.
Blu-Ray Review: Natalie Portman, Ashton Kutcher in Decent ‘No Strings Attached’
Submitted by BrianTT on May 10, 2011 - 1:40pmCHICAGO – I have become nearly exhausted by writing reviews about the modern decline of the romantic comedy, the genre most in need of a complete overhaul. Most of them nowadays are horrendous. So, no one is more surprised than this critic to say that “No Strings Attached” with Ashton Kutcher & Natalie Portman, now available on Blu-ray and DVD, isn’t bad. It’s no genre classic, but it’s an enjoyable comedy on a Saturday night.

Interview: ‘Strongman’ Director Zachary Levy Rises to the Challenge
Submitted by mattmovieman on May 10, 2011 - 11:20amCHICAGO – Self-distributing an intimate, character-driven documentary may seem as daunting a task as bending a penny with your fingers. And yet, first-time feature director Zachary Levy is up to challenge (the former of the two, of course). His 2009 documentary, “Strongman” played to great acclaim at festivals, and is set to kick off a return engagement at the Facets Cinémathèque starting May 11.
