TV Review: The CW’s ‘The Carrie Diaries’ Tries Too Hard to Please

CHICAGO – It’s all about timing. Great teen dramedies find a very specific rhythm. It’s in the non-stop, often rapid-fire dialogue between characters overflowing with hormones, social drama, and parental problems.

Interview: A Vote for Actor Necar Zadegan on ‘Emily Owens, M.D.’

Necar Zadegan

CHICAGO – One of the perkier new TV shows of the fall season on The CW network is the medical drama, “Emily Owens, M.D.,” about a first year medical student navigating the rigors of a big city hospital. One of the more memorable characters is Dr. Gina Bandari, portrayed by Necar Zadegan, a teaching surgeon that Emily (Marnie Gummer) will encounter along her journey.

TV Review: Mamie Gummer Deserves Better Than Manipulative ‘Emily Owens, M.D.’

CHICAGO – I really like Mamie Gummer, not only the daughter of our best living actress (Meryl Streep) but an increasingly interesting performer in her own right. Her charisma and ability kept me in a position where I was trying to make excuses for the poorly written, poorly directed, poorly conceived “Emily Owens, M.D.,” premiering tonight on The CW.

TV Review: The CW’s ‘Beauty and the Beast’ Misses Allure of Concept

Beauty and the Beast

CHICAGO – The foundation of a show like The CW’s “Beauty and the Beast” is a timeless one. There’s a reason so many screenwriters in film and television keep returning to the concept of brute force partnering with stunning beauty. So why did this show’s creators do so little with it? There’s no edge here. Everything has been rounded out to the point that it lacks all personality. It’s the kind of show one can barely remember watching by the time the opening credits are done on what follows it.

DVD Review: Latest Seasons of CW Shows ‘Nikita,’ ‘Hart of Dixie’

Hart of Dixie

CHICAGO – Every year from about February to May, TV pundits play the cancellation game. We look at the ratings, read about picked-up pilots, and try to figure out what the networks will renew and cancel. Two of the biggest question marks of this past season were The CW’s “Hart of Dixie” and “Nikita,” but they were both spared the sharp end of the axe and are returning this month to the air. Why? What did the networks and fans see in them? Check out the first season of “Hart of Dixie” on DVD and the second season of “Nikita,” available on Blu-ray and DVD, to find out.

TV Review: The CW’s ‘Arrow’ Misses Bullseye But Hits Target

CHICAGO – Can The CW survive on genre product alone? They’ve given up entirely on comedy, their reality shows produce immeasurably small ratings, and most of their traditional dramas are either past their prime (“Gossip Girl”) or struggling to find an audience (“Hart of Dixie”).

TV News: CBS Wins Thursday Nights, Audiences Check Out ‘Elementary,’ ‘Last Resort’

Elementary

CHICAGO – Two of our most promising new shows of 2012 were respectably sampled last night on the first Thursday of the Fall season as viewers turned “Elementary” into a solid first-week hit and enough people checked out “Last Resort” opposite the #1 show of the evening to call that a success as well. CBS won the night easily while ABC has plenty to be happy about. FOX should be more concerned and NBC may just want to go dark on the night that they used to own in the ratings.

TV News: NBC Struggles on Wednesday Nights, CBS Wins Close Ratings War

The Neighbors

CHICAGO – The first new Wednesday of the Fall 2012 season told a predictable story — CBS and ABC are doing well, FOX is still under-delivering, and NBC is in dire shape. As for new shows, “The Neighbors” was well-sampled out of mega-hit “Modern Family” but we’ll see if that lasts while “Animal Practice” and “Guys with Kids” can practically feel the blade of the cancellation axe already.

TV News: CBS Leads First Tuesday Night, FOX Plummets

Vegas

CHICAGO – Network ratings continued to erode across the board on the first full Tuesday of the Fall 2012 schedule but the news is relatively good for fans of the new show “Vegas” and not so good for anyone who likes what FOX is doing on Tuesday nights with “New Girl,” “Ben and Kate,” and “The Mindy Project.” Meanwhile, NBC’s “Go On” and “The New Normal” appear to have stabilized to the point that they will likely stick around for awhile.

TV News: CBS Struggles on Most Competitive Night of the Week

Partners

CHICAGO – “Dancing with the Stars,” “The Voice,” “Castle,” “2 Broke Girls,” “How I Met Your Mother,” “Hawaii Five-O,” “Bones,” “Revolution” — Monday nights have officially become the most crowded and competitive night of the week. And, as is often the case when a night gets overcrowded, ratings dropped across the board last night, the first official night of the Fall TV season.
