Film News: First Look at ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’

The Hobbit Poster

CHICAGO — Warner Bros. Pictures geared up for the release of Peter Jackson’s upcoming epic “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” by screening 10 minutes of never-before-seen footage at CinemaCon, the official convention of the National Association of Theater Owners (NATO) according to a studio press release. Ian McKellan, Cate Blanchett, Orlando Bloom and Elijah Wood return to reprise their roles as seen in the trilogy “The Lord of the Rings”, the sequel to J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit”.

Blu-ray Review: ‘The Adventures of Tintin’ Looks Great, Feels Hollow

The Adventures of Tintin

CHICAGO – Being a Steven Spielberg super-fan, I looked forward to being able to re-appreciate “The Adventures of Tintin” with a beautiful HD picture and, I hoped, some special features to enhance my opinion of a film that I found pretty seriously flawed in theaters. Well, the HD transfer is a beauty — the film looks just as good as its 3D theatrical presentation — but the film is still flawed and the special features are lackluster. In theaters, it was a near-miss and my opinion has not changed on Blu-ray.

Film News: First Trailer Released For Peter Jackson’s ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’

The Hobbit An Unexpected Journey

CHICAGO – The exciting trailers for next year’s blockbusters just keep coming. Only a few days after “The Dark Knight Rises” had its first full length trailer released, Peter Jackson’s long awaited prequel to the Lord of the Rings trilogy finally has a trailer.

Blu-Ray Review: Amazing Extended Edition Box Set of ‘The Lord of the Rings’

Lord of the Rings: Extended Edition

CHICAGO – A few times every year, a box set comes into our office that simply feels beyond review. What is there to say about something as notable as the “Alien Quadrilogy” with its five days worth of special features or the gorgeous set for the “Back to the Future” movies? They’re must-owns that are beyond any minor criticism. Such is also the case with Warner Bros.’ recently-released set for the extended editions of Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings” films. If you own a Blu-ray player, it’s incomplete without this box set. It’s that simple.

Film News: James Cameron to Helm ‘Avatar 2,’ ‘Avatar 3’

Avatar

CHICAGO – How does a filmmaker follow up the highest-grossing movie of all time? For writer and director James Cameron, the answer is simple: make the movie a trilogy.

Interview: Rose McIver in ‘The Lovely Bones’ From Director of ‘The Lord of the Rings’

CHICAGO – “The Lovely Bones,” which is directed by “The Lord of the Rings” director Peter Jackson with a relatively unknown executive producer credit from Steven Spielberg, has gone down in history as a poorly reviewed film that was based on a much better novel of the same name by Alice Sebold.

Blu-Ray Review: Original Animated Version of ‘The Lord of the Rings’

LOTR Animated Title Treatment

CHICAGO – Last week we covered the highly anticipated Blu-ray release of “Lord of the Rings” and even had a chat with Richard Taylor of WETA Workshop about the Best Picture-winning film from director Peter Jackson. There may be a few fans of that series out there who don’t know that Jackson, Elijah Wood, Viggo Mortensen, and Ian McKellen weren’t the first to go to Middle Earth. Ralph Bakshi went there over three decades ago and his animated “Lord of the Rings” is now on Blu-ray for the first time.

Interview: Creative Director Richard Taylor of Weta, ‘Lord of the Rings’

CHICAGO – With the heralded release this week of Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy on Blu-ray DVD, the opportunity to appreciate the epic scope of the visionary Middle Earth in the home theater has never been so highly rendered.

Blu-Ray Review: ‘The Lord of the Rings Trilogy’ Exhilarates on Blu-Ray

Lord of the Rings Blu-Ray

CHICAGO – The first words we hear are those of the beguiling elf Galadriel, whose ethereal voice haunts an empty screen while declaring, “The world is changed.” And so it had in December 2001, when Americans were reeling from 9/11, and more eager than ever to escape into a fantasy where moral certainty was never in doubt, and pure-hearted heroes clung to the belief that there was still good in the world, and it was worth fighting for.

Blu-Ray Review: Great ‘District 9’ Given Amazing HD Release

District 9

CHICAGO – The Blu-Ray release of “District 9” is one of the best of 2009, a perfectly transferred film with a great selection of special features that enhance the viewer experience of the film itself. “District 9” is one of the most beloved films of last year and Sony deserves credit for treating its diehard fans as well as any studio in the last twelve months with only one major flaw in an otherwise perfect package.

  • Rookie Blue 2012

CHICAGOABC’s “Rookie Blue” may be the biggest TV hit with the least amount of press. Perhaps because it’s a Canadian import or because it’s a summer series but the show never makes magazine covers or even highlight articles in entertainment magazines. But it’s developed into a pretty solid cop show, as evidenced by the tight, well-made third-season premiere with a great guest appearance from William Shatner.

  • CHICAGO – There are some talented people starring in TBS’s new sitcom “Men at Work,” another attempt to grow the budding cable network’s brand as a home for comedy.
