On-Air Film Review: Black Sheep of the Family! Review of ‘Lamb’

Lamb

Film Review: Animal Psychology Charges Rugged Thug Tale ‘The Drop’

The Drop

CHICAGO – For a film adapted from “Mystic River” and “Gone Baby Gone” author Dennis Lehane, there are no children in danger in “The Drop,” but there is a pit bull puppy named Rocco. The dog’s involvement in the story, an animal who gets as many closeups this side of a Charles Martin Smith film, invites the uncharacteristically blunt metaphor of how creatures fight for power, or even just the impression of power.

Film Review: Brian De Palma Returns with Revenge Thriller ‘Passion’

CHICAGO – Brian De Palma returns to what he does best after a few notable failures in the last decade, producing his best work since 2002’s “Femme Fatale” and arguably returning to form in the surprisingly effective thriller “Passion.”

Blu-ray Review: Talented Cast Elevates Leaden Direction of ‘Dead Man Down’

Dead Man Down

CHICAGO – “Dead Man Down,” recently released on Blu-ray and DVD, isn’t the awful movie that you may have heard but it is a misfire from a pretty talented cast and the director of the original “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.” The great ensemble and modestly entertaining noir concept are defeated by leaden direction that mistakes tedium for tone. It’s just boring, which is almost difficult to believe given the notable screen charisma of its stars.

Film Review: Colin Farrell Can’t Let Go in ‘Dead Man Down’

CHICAGO – Nothing like a high concept crime story to compliment “spring forward.” Colin Farrell plays the revenge card to the nth degree in the unusual and slowly paced “Dead Man Down,” and takes Noomi Rapace (of the Swedish “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”) along for the ride.

Blu-ray Review: ‘Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows’ Offers Nothing New

Sherlock Holmes A Game of Shadows Blu-ray

CHICAGO – Now that BBC’s acclaimed “Sherlock” has offered the definitive version of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s beloved detective, Guy Ritchie’s routine “Holmes” franchise looks all the more elementary in comparison. No amount of trademark mugging from leading man Robert Downey Jr. can compensate for the overwhelming hollowness of this slickly edited series.

Film Review: Fascinating Journey to ‘Prometheus’ Makes For Bumpy Ride

CHICAGO – Ridley Scott’s “Prometheus” rides a wave of expectation, anticipation, hype, and an already-building backlash into theaters this weekend and all I have to say is something that most critics hesitate to do – you need to see this for yourself and make up your own mind.

Film News: New Full-Length ‘Prometheus’ Trailer Released

Prometheus 2012

CHICAGO – A few months ago, the first teaser trailer for Ridley Scott’s new film “Prometheus” was released. The short trailer was met with excitement and buzz for the new film, which many consider to be the blockbuster they are most interested in seeing this summer; a summer which also includes “The Avengers,” “The Amazing Spider-Man,” and “The Dark Knight Rises” among many others.
