Mary McCormack

TV Review: Strong Actresses Carry ‘Fairly Legal,’ ‘In Plain Sight’

Fairly Legal

CHICAGO – Two of USA’s hits return tonight with the second-season premiere of “Fairly Legal” and the fifth-and-final-season premiere of “In Plain Sight.” Both shows work largely because of the talent brought to them by their lead actresses, a welcome change of pace for a network that can often feel a little bit testosterone-heavy (“Psych,” “White Collar,” “Burn Notice” — all driven by their male protagonists). Sadly, the writing could still use some work on both dramas but no one can deny the charismatic skill of the women at their centers.

DVD Review: Second Season of USA Network’s ‘In Plain Sight’

In Plain Sight: Season Two

CHICAGO – “In Plain Sight” has not really built the loyal following of other basic cable shows like “Burn Notice” or “The Closer” and I wish the show would try harder to live up to its potential but it’s still wildy entertaining and features one of the better TV actress performances from Mary McCormack.

CHICAGOUSA Network’s “In Plain Sight” was one of the best new shows of 2008, another hit for the highest-rated network on cable, USA. The first-year series still needs to iron out a few things to truly live up its potential but the excellent Mary McCormack continues to rock on one of the few must-see basic cable shows this season.

CHICAGO – “In Plain Sight” may not get the buzz or press of other cable hits like “Burn Notice” or “The Closer” and the show still needs some ironing out to truly live up to its potential but I watched every episode of this USA Network action drama when it aired and anxiously look forward to the new season (which we’ll review here on or just before its April 19th premiere) for one reason, Mary McCormack.

TV, DVD, BLU-RAY & THEATER REVIEWS

  • It's a Disaster DVD

CHICAGO – The summer movie season has barely begun, and I’m already sick to death of the apocalypse. It seems to have pervaded every mainstream genre, from action-packed thrillers to raunchy comedies. I’ll take a hilarious mess like “This Is the End” over grim sci-fi junk like “Oblivion” and “After Earth” any day, simply because it delivers its cautionary message with tongue-in-cheek exuberance.

  • Breaking Bad S5

CHICAGO – Sony knows that AMC’s “Breaking Bad” has one of the most loyal fan bases in television and so have released increasingly impressive Blu-ray and DVD season sets of the Emmy Award-winning program. The latest, the first half of the fifth season that aired in Summer 2012, comes with EIGHT HOURS of special features, including an exclusive scene, deleted scenes, and star-filled commentaries on every single episode. It’s one of the most impressive TV releases of the season for arguably the best show on TV.
