Film Review: Spike Lee’s ‘Oldboy’ Remake Merely Echoes Superior Original
Submitted by BrianTT on November 26, 2013 - 3:57pmAfter years in development hell, Spike Lee’s remake of Park Chan-wook’s beloved “Oldboy” is finally here. Does it live up to the high expectations set by the original?
Blu-ray Review: Star-Studded ‘Gangster Squad’ Bores with Recycled Tropes
Submitted by mattmovieman on April 25, 2013 - 8:56amCHICAGO – Ruben Fleischer’s “Gangster Squad” is a steak devoid of juice. It has all the trappings of an effortlessly enjoyable genre exercise, but it doesn’t bring a single fresh idea to the table. It goes through the usual motions of a standard gangster picture while giving each overqualified member of its ensemble exactly one note to play. And they’re all exceedingly familiar notes, conveying a tune so familiar even Sam would refuse to play it again.
Blu-ray Review: Unnecessary ‘Men in Black 3’ Bolstered by Brilliant Ensemble
Submitted by mattmovieman on December 12, 2012 - 9:23amCHICAGO – 2012 contained three great Tommy Lee Jones performances, and one of them was delivered by Josh Brolin. Whereas Jones himself was flat-out brilliant in “Hope Springs” and “Lincoln,” he was assigned the thankless task of playing second (or third) banana to the wisecracking, increasingly Bugs Bunny-like Will Smith in Barry Sonnenfeld’s wholly unnecessary third installment in the “Men in Black” franchise.
Film Review: ‘Men in Black III’ Deserves to Be Neuralyzed From Memory
Submitted by BrianTT on May 25, 2012 - 9:44amCHICAGO – “Men in Black III” is such a soulless venture, a film made by committee that doesn’t display the touch of anyone with any remaining actual interest in the characters. In the pipeline for years, the film has been fine-tuned to the point that all of its personality was buffed out in the process.

Interview: ‘Young Adult’ Director Jason Reitman on Open-Ended, Non-Message Directing
Submitted by HollywoodChicago.com on December 18, 2011 - 4:58pmCHICAGO – Instead of trying to fill giant shoes in the shadows of his legendary filmmaker father Ivan Reitman (“Ghostbusters”), Jason Reitman has been successfully blazing his own path of films without message that are designed to incite your thoughts and question your actions.
Film News: Josh Brolin Signs on For Spike Lee’s ‘Oldboy’ Remake
Submitted by BrianTT on August 30, 2011 - 7:57pmCHICAGO – If a remake of the 2003 Korean film “Oldboy” didn’t look like it was going to happen, it sure does now. After Spike Lee had signed on to direct the Americanized remake a few weeks ago, just yesterday Empire reported that Josh Brolin has signed on to play the lead character.
Blu-Ray Review: Beloved ‘True Grit’ Remake in Bonus-Packed Edition
Submitted by BrianTT on June 21, 2011 - 3:48pmCHICAGO – With the highest domestic gross of the entire career of the beloved Coen brothers (over $170 million domestically, ranking #13 for 2010 releases) and an amazing ten Oscar nominations, “True Grit” was easily one of the most popular films of the last year. I had some issues with the piece overall but I’m ecstatic that a piece like this one outgrossed so many of the more obviously commercial entries from the holiday season. It serves as proof that quality can still be profitable and the excellent Blu-ray release from Paramount treats the film’s many fans with appropriate respect.
Blu-Ray Review: Woody Allen’s ‘You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger’
Submitted by mattmovieman on March 3, 2011 - 2:16pmCHICAGO – “My relationship with death remains the same. I’m strongly against it,” mused Woody Allen at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival, during the press conference for his latest London-set comedy. The quote was quintessential Allen, though it had a particular poignance in light of his disappointing yet diverting offering, “You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger.”
