Film Review: Fantastic, Visceral ‘The Raid: Redemption’ Beats Up Hollywood Action Movies
Submitted by BrianTT on March 23, 2012 - 8:59am.![]() Rating: 4.5/5.0 |
CHICAGO – Gareth Evans’ “The Raid: Redemption” is a powerhouse kick to the gut of bored action movie fans. And the face. And the kneecap. And the balls. It’s an aggressive, adrenaline-fueled success in so many ways that it might make you like recent Hollywood action films less than you remembered. They weren’t this powerful, super-charged, or generally remarkable. For its target audience, I find it impossible to believe that “The Raid” won’t connect. In other words, if you like martial arts action movies, you have a new must-see.

It’s an incredibly accomplished martial arts film that feels like something inspired equally by John Carpenter and Jackie Chan. Blu-ray Review: ‘The Thing’ Prequel Almost Works But Misses Paranoia of Original
Submitted by BrianTT on February 12, 2012 - 7:27pm.CHICAGO – John Carpenter’s “The Thing” is a brilliant study in paranoia. It is more than a mere horror film. The remake/prequel, recently released on Blu-ray and DVD, is a decent horror film but the comparison to the classic original and some serious mistakes in the final act make “decent” not good enough by association.
Film Review: Future Cult Hit in Fun B-Movie ‘Attack the Block’
Submitted by BrianTT on July 29, 2011 - 2:40pm.CHICAGO – Jon Favreau’s “Cowboys & Aliens” opens today and is guaranteed to make millions more at the international box office than Joe Cornish’s “Attack the Block.” That’s the bad news. The good news is that I can also guarantee you that history will regard the smaller film as the significantly better one. The line for this future cult hit starts here. Get in it before your friends tell you to.
Interview: Joe Cornish, John Boyega of ‘Attack the Block’
Submitted by BrianTT on July 25, 2011 - 10:02am.CHICAGO – “Attack the Block” has been building buzz all year and Chicago will finally be able to see what all the positive internet hype has been about when it opens here on Friday, July 29th, 2011.
Film Review: John Carpenter Returns With Mediocre ‘The Ward’
Submitted by BrianTT on July 6, 2011 - 9:20pm.CHICAGO – John Carpenter’s “The Ward” would make for a satisfying episode of the now-canceled “Masters of Horror” and might therefore be an interesting rental someday but it doesn’t live up to the pedigree of its once-brilliant director and ultimately disappoints regardless of the name above the title. After a decade away from the big screen, Carpenter proves he still has his legendary skill with tension and the film features a few strong performances but the script is a generic, derivative mess.

Blu-Ray Review: John Carpenter’s Incredible ‘Escape From New York’
Submitted by BrianTT on August 10, 2010 - 8:46am.CHICAGO – Our younger readers may find it hard to believe that John Carpenter was once one of the most inspiring filmmakers in the world. He’s still one of the truly influential voices of the ’70s and ’80s despite the tragedy that has been his career for the last couple decades. Save for the occasional flare-up (“Masters of Horror: Cigarette Burns,” “In the Mouth of Madness”), Carpenter’s work has barely resembled his prime. For proof, check out the still-amazing and timeless “Escape From New York,” now available on Blu-ray for the first time.
Blu-Ray Review: John Carpenter’s ‘Escape From L.A.’ With Kurt Russell
Submitted by BrianTT on May 3, 2010 - 11:28am.CHICAGO – There is no Blu-ray justice. The great “Escape From New York” sits unavailable in HD, along with dozens of other great movies of its era, but the vastly inferior sequel “Escape From L.A.” lands on the format this week. “L.A.” isn’t a horrible film, but it works mostly because of the goodwill created by love for the original, which makes that film’s unavailability on the format all the more bewildering.
Blu-Ray Review: ‘Halloween 2’ Continues Torture of Original Remake
Submitted by BrianTT on January 26, 2010 - 6:00am.CHICAGO – Not quite as poorly paced or simply awful as Rob Zombie’s first foray into the world of Michael Myers with his abyssmal remake of John Carpenter’s timeless “Halloween,” the sequel, now available on Blu-ray and DVD, still finds a way to continue the torture.
