WGN Radio

TV Review: ‘The Amazing Race: Unfinished Business’ Offers Second Chance

CHICAGO – The Emmy Award-winning CBS hit “The Amazing Race” returns tonight, Feb. 20th, 2011, with a group of familiar faces, most of them red from embarrassment at the mistakes they made last time and looking to correct them on the new season, appropriately titled “Unfinished Business.”

Music News: Lady Gaga Single ‘Born This Way’ Fastest Seller in iTunes History

Lady Gaga - Born This Way

CHICAGO – Apple announced today, according to MTV.com, that the new single by Lady Gaga, “Born This Way,” is the fastest-selling in the history of iTunes. It’s Lady Gaga’s world. We just live in it.

Blu-Ray Review: Tragic Tale of Talent Wasted on ‘My Soul to Take’

My Soul to Take

CHICAGO – You won’t find many critics who adore Wes Craven with as much horror-fan glee as this one. From the ’70s to the mid-’90s (from “The Last House on the Left” to at least the first “Scream” movie with the exception of the awful “Vampire in Brooklyn”), the man was one of the best genre directors alive. And he proved his range with an old-fashioned, effective thriller like “Red Eye” that hinted at another chapter.

Blu-Ray Review: Disappointing Return of ‘Paranormal Activity 2’

Paranormal Activity 2

CHICAGO – There’s something that horror movie producers never seem capable of understanding. A great horror movie is like watching a magic trick. It doesn’t work nearly as well the second time. The sequels to “Saw,” “The Blair Witch Project,” and now “Paranormal Activity,” are not that dissimilar from watching the same rabbit come out of the same hat with nothing much different than a new colored bandana around its neck. “Paranormal Activity 2” has moments but doesn’t amount to nearly the same overall experience as the first.

Film Review: Liam Neeson Fails to Find Missing Identity of ‘Unknown’

CHICAGO – “Unknown,” the latest thriller to attempt to turn Liam Neeson into an unusual choice for an action star (a la “Taken” and “The A-Team”), is one of those films that nearly works but falls just short of its audience’s expectations. The elements are there — a (mostly) strong ensemble, an interesting concept, an intriguing location, a promising director — but the film never comes together because the script needed one more rewrite that it just never received.

Film Review: Gregg Araki’s ‘Kaboom’ Merrily Enters the Ontological Void

Kaboom Film Review

CHICAGO – Rarely has the apocalypse appeared as trivial as it does in “Kaboom,” a disarmingly lovable mess of a picture that manages to work in spite of itself. It’s the tenth feature film directed by Queer New Wave icon Gregg Araki, who seems to be in an infinitely better mood than he was fifteen years ago, back when the Reagan era’s ignorance of the AIDS crisis was still festering like an open wound.

Film Review: Michael Bay-Produced ‘I Am Number Four’ a Solid Block of Superhero Gouda

CHICAGO – While the new sci-fi/superhero film “I Am Number Four” can be easily dismissed as yet another “Twilight” knockoff, the power of two mega-producers arms the film with nearly as much right as it does wrong.

Blu-Ray Review: 20th Anniversary of Powerful ‘Thelma & Louise’

Thelma & Louise

CHICAGO – Can you believe that Ridley Scott’s “Thelma & Louise” is twenty years old? Me neither. Well, almost twenty. It’s really going to be two decades old in May and it’s next year’s Oscars that will mark the 20th anniversary of its win for Best Original Screenplay and other multiple nominations including Director and nods for both of its leads, Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon. All three lost to the wave of “The Silence of the Lambs” but it’s easy to see now that it was probably a close vote total for at least one of the two ladies.

Blu-Ray Review: Mesmerizing Power of ‘The Double Life of Veronique’

The Double Life of Veronique

CHICAGO – Stanley Kubrick put it perfectly when he said that the great Polish director Krzysztof Kieslowski found a way to dramatize what other people merely talk about. There’s a reason “The Three Colors Trilogy” had already become a part of a college philosophy class by the time I graduated college in the mid-’90s. With “The Decalogue,” “Three Colors,” and “The Double Life of Veronique,” recently released by Criterion on Blu-ray, the man became a legend. And, as this wonderful edition proves, deservedly so.
