Film Review: Delightful ‘Life Happens’ Proves Truth is Funny

Life Happens

CHICAGO – Is it possible to be addled in encroaching middle age? Because “Life Happens,” a film about an ex-party girl turned single mother, starring “it” girl Krysten Ritter, actually is quite funny, and gets those laughs simply by applying some simple truths to a unique situation. Kate Bosworth, Rachel Bilson, Justin Kirk and Kirsten Johnston co-star.

TV Review: FOX’s Derivative ‘The Finder’ Loses Its Personality

The Finder

CHICAGO – Every once in awhile there’s a show that feels so derivative of other programs that it kind of just disappears while you’re watching it. A show that gets sucked into the fabric of TV history because it never develops a personality of its own. There have been countless failed procedurals, comedies, and dramas that tried to walk a well-trod road only to find that they couldn’t make it. We can add “The Finder” to that list.

TV Review: Cluttered ‘Happy Town’ Unlikely to Have Many Tourists

CHICAGO – Despite a star-powered supporting cast, an intriguing concept, and a set-up that seems right at home on the network that launched “Twin Peaks,” “Desperate Housewives,” and “Lost,” the new mystery/drama “Happy Town” never comes together.

TV, DVD, BLU-RAY & THEATER REVIEWS

  • Hunger Games

CHICAGO – Lionsgate announced 2-disc Blu-ray and DVD editions of their massive hit “The Hunger Games” to be released on August 18, 2012 complete with three hours of extensive bonus features. The highlight of the bonus material is an eight-part documentary called “The World is Watching: Making of The Hunger Games.”

  • Certified Copy

CHICAGO – Abbas Kiarostami’s “Certified Copy” should have made my top ten last year. Every year, there’s a movie or two that I realize halfway through the next year that I didn’t praise to the right degree. Just a year later, “Certified Copy,” recently released in resplendent Criterion Blu-ray and DVD editions, feels even more like a monumental work, a brilliant filmmaking exercise that features spectacular performances, beautiful writing, and some of the most interesting thematic work of the last several years. With great special features, this is a perfect addition to the Criterion Collection.
